Health Risks of Antibacterial Soaps and Hand Sanitizers

triclosan qac antibacterial soap hand sanitizers

Dr Mercola

Story at-a-glance

  • Routinely disinfecting your body and surroundings may actually cause more harm than good in the long run. Not only do they promote the development of drug-resistant bacteria, antibacterial compounds such as triclosan and quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs or “quats”) have also been linked to a number of harmful health effects
  • Research has shown triclosan is a potent endocrine disruptor that interferes with thyroid function. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can promote a variety of health problems, including obesity, breast, ovarian, prostate and testicular cancer, preterm and low birth weight babies, precocious puberty in girls and undescended testicles in boys
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned triclosan from soap products in 2016 due to suspected health risks, but it’s still found in many toothpastes, mouthwashes and hand sanitizers. Triclosan also makes its way into our food supply; it’s routinely found in lakes, rivers, streams, wastewater, irrigation water and biosolids applied to fields as fertilizer
  • QACs are found in cleaning products, hand sanitizers, personal care products, many kinds of wipes (surface, baby, hand and disinfecting wipes) and certain pesticides
  • Adverse health effects of QACs include allergic contact dermatitis, asthma and COPD, suppressed immune function, reduced fertility, impaired embryo development and developmental disorder, mitochondrial dysfunction and an increased risk of antimicrobial resistant infections

Washing your hands is at the top of the list when it comes to effective prevention of contagious illnesses and infections, but many still make the mistake of assuming you have to use antibacterial soap to get the job done right.

The same goes for other household cleaning. Routinely disinfecting your body and surroundings may actually cause more harm than good in the long run. Not only do they promote the development of drug-resistant bacteria, antibacterial compounds such as triclosan and quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs or “quats”) have also been linked to a number of harmful health effects.

Adverse Health Effects of Triclosan

Starting with triclosan, research has shown it’s a potent endocrine disruptor that interferes with thyroid function.1,2 Hormone-disrupting chemicals are a serious concern, as they can promote a wide variety of health problems, including obesity, breast, ovarian, prostate and testicular cancer, preterm and low birth weight babies, precocious puberty in girls and undescended testicles in boys.

Triclosan also has adverse effects on cellular function, molecular pathways and mitochondrial function, all of which are described in a 2018 paper.3 According to that report, an estimated 75% of the U.S. population is exposed to triclosan via consumer goods and personal care products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned triclosan from soap products in 2016 due to suspected health risks, but it’s still found in many toothpastes, mouthwashes and hand sanitizers. It also makes its way into our food supply, as it’s routinely found in lakes, rivers, streams, wastewater, irrigation water and biosolids applied to fields as fertilizer. As reported in this 2018 study, triclosan:

  • Is readily absorbed into human skin and oral mucosa and found in various human tissues and fluids.
  • Has cytotoxic effects and is associated with cancer development, especially liver cancer.
  • Is proinflammatory and enhances production of reactive oxygen species (ROS)Decreases cardiovascular and skeletal muscle function due to its effects on calcium signaling in muscle cellsIs correlated with reproductive and developmental defects, and has been linked to higher rates of miscarriage — a potentially serious concern, considering traces of triclosan have been found in 100% of all urine samples collected from pregnant women and 51% of cord blood samples4
  • Is associated with an elevated risk of allergies, asthma and food sensitivities, especially in children under 18Promotes the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

‘Quats’ — Another Harmful Class of Antimicrobials

The proliferation of quaternary ammonium compounds or “quats” is also raising concern. As reported in a 2023 review published in Environmental Science & Technology:

“Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs; also referred to as quats) comprise hundreds of chemicals and mixtures. QACs serve many different functions, primarily as antimicrobials, surfactants, preservatives, antistatic and softening agents, and dispersants.

They are often found in cleaning products, hand sanitizers, personal care products, many kinds of wipes (surface, baby, hand, and disinfecting wipes), and various pesticidal products …

Adverse ecological effects include acute and chronic toxicity to susceptible aquatic organisms, with concentrations of some QACs approaching levels of concern.

Suspected or known adverse health outcomes include dermal and respiratory effects, developmental and reproductive toxicity, disruption of metabolic function such as lipid homeostasis, and impairment of mitochondrial function. QACs’ role in antimicrobial resistance has also been demonstrated …

Large-scale fogging and spraying of products containing QACs occurs as a COVID-19 control measure, despite the World Health Organization and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discouraging these practices as ineffective and potentially harmful.

Additionally, use of certain QACs has increased in recent years because they are frequent replacements for the 19 active ingredients, including triclosan and triclocarban, banned from use in over-the-counter hand and body washes …

While QACs can kill or inactivate a number of different microorganisms in controlled laboratory settings, which is often presumed to be beneficial and marketed to create an impression of cleanliness, evidence of QAC effectiveness in reducing transmission of infectious disease in real world settings and applications, such as the field of healthcare, is limited.

In addition, no high-quality evidence shows that antimicrobials bonded to surfaces reduce healthcare acquired infections.”

While research is limited, what we do have shows quats pose serious risks to the environment, especially marine life. Disturbingly, these chemicals are flushed down the drain in such quantities that “QAC concentrations in aquatic ecosystems are approaching protective toxicity thresholds.”

In humans, post-application exposure accounts for an estimated 90% of exposure, such as touching a counter or door knob after using a QAC-containing disinfectant and then touching your mouth. Quats are also found in household dust and air.

Health Hazards Associated With Quats

As detailed in the Environmental Science & Technology review, adverse health effects of QACs include:

  • Allergic contact dermatitisAsthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary cell damage and lung inflammationIncreased concentrations of inflammatory cytokinesSuppressed immune function.
  • Reduced fertility in both sexes — In female mice, adverse outcomes include increased time between estrus cycles, reduced ovulation and implantation, and increased postimplantation losses. Male outcomes include decreased sperm concentration and motility. Other animal research has demonstrated that QACs have embryocidal, ovicidal and spermicidal activity when administered through the diet — so much so, a 1975 patent details the use of QACs “for the control of fertility.”
  • Impaired embryo development and neural tube defects (regardless of which parent is exposed).
  • Developmental disorders resulting from alterations in cholesterol biosynthesis.
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction — As noted by the authors of the review, “Chemically, most QACs can be classified as lipophilic cations that can accumulate into a negatively charged mitochondrial matrix.Evidence of direct inhibition of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation comes from multiple in vitro studies involving several QACs.”
  • Increased risk of antimicrobial resistant infections

Considering the hazards, I strongly recommend ditching all antimicrobial products containing triclosan or QACs. Warm water and a mild soap is all you need to scrub germs off your hands. Even the FDA admits “there isn’t enough science to show that over-the-counter (OTC) antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water.”7

France Inspires Revolution Across Europe and Latin America

Latin American Revolutionary Francisco de Miranda

Episode 17: Foreign Reactions: A Divided Europe

Living the French Revolution and Age of Napoleon

Dr Suzanne M Desan

Film Review

Europe’s reaction to the French revolution was divided. Revolutionaries from Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium (as well as the Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda) poured into the country hoping to copy the French example. Meanwhile 100,000 monarchists (most aristocrats and clergy) fled abroad, where they set up a shadow government in Koblenz (Prussia).

Europe’s oldest constitutional monarchy, Britain initially supported the French revolution. They had experienced two revolutions themselves (the British civil war and the Glorious Revolution, when the Dutch prince William of Orange replaced James II as king) in the 17th century.

British opinion would drastically shift under the influence of British parliamentarian Edmund Burke, the so-called father of modern conservatism. In his most famous work Reflections on the Revolution in France, Burke argued that hierarchy was essential to hold society together and that government was meant to control people for their own good.

A number of prominent British intellectuals, including feminist Mary Woolstonecraft and scientist Joseph Priestly, openly rejected Burke’s views. Burke’s most prominent opponent was English-born philosopher and political activist Thomas Paine. The latter came to the US in 1774 to support the American revolution. In 1791, he refuted Burke’s work with the Rights of of Man. Arguing that all men are equal with an innate entitlement to natural law and representation in government, the book was immediately condemned as treasonous. After fleeing to France he was tried in absentia and sentenced to death.

Determined to stamp out all revolutionary sentiment in the UK, the British government tried numerous other political reformers for treason and prosecuted pamphleteers under laws. They eventually banned all large meetings were banned, forcing English and Irish revolutionaries underground.

Inspired by the French Enlightment, radicals led revolutions in Switzerland, the Dutch Republic and the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium) in the 1780s. Those who took over the Dutch cities (from Austria*) in 1784 formed militias that pushed for elections to replace the Orangist aristocrats who ruled them. After 1787, when the prince of Orange called in Prussian troops to crush the Dutch revolution, 10,000 Dutch revolutionaries fled to France.

Swiss Revolutionaries

In 1777 Swiss republicans, demanding broader voting rights in choosing the Swiss Confederation of Cantons, were also forced to flee to France.

Belgian Revolutionaries

By 1788, Belgian patriots drove Austrian troops out of most of Belgium (Austrian Netherlands) and in 1790 ten provinces created a Belgian constitution modeled on the 1776 Articles of Confederation. A few months later, Leopold II (Austrian king and Holy Roman Emperor) reinvaded, and Belgian revolutionary leaders also fled to France.

Prussian Revolutionary Jean Baptiste de Clouts

The Prussian baron Jean Baptiste de Clouts, also emigrated to France, where he renounced his title, became leader of the foreign revolutionaries and called for “transnational” revolution.

Declaration of Pilnitz

Meanwhile in 1791, the Austrian and Prussian kings (previously enemies) signed the Declaration of Pilnitz, which called the other monarchs of Europe to help restore the king of France as absolute monarch.

Farmergeddon SPREADS across Europe! Militants block motorways in France, Germany and Belgium and vow to cut off Paris

Major European cities in Paris, Germany and Belgium were placed under siege by militant farmers across the continent tonight.

Armoured cars and 5,000 extra police surrounded Paris on Monday as a ‘quasi-military’ blockade swung into action, while police in Hamburg, Germany, were called out to deal with farmers who have been protesting Chancellor Olaf Scholz‘s decision to cut subsidies.

Over in Belgium, a minister was forced to evacuate the site of a protest on a major highway in the Walloon region.

As night fell, some 1500 tractors were in place at six major junctions entering Paris, while agriculture workers called for more protection against rising costs, and for an end to the EU’s green net zero policies.

Protesting farmers started the operation by blocking the A13 highway to the west of the capital, the A4 to the east and the A6 on which hundreds of tractors rolled towards Paris from the south.

By midafternoon they appeared to have met their objective of establishing eight chokepoints on major roads into Paris, according to Sytadin, a traffic monitoring service.

Another target was the Rungis International Market – nicknamed the ‘belly of Paris’ – which serves the majority of the capital’s restaurants, cafés and supermarkets.

‘This is a battle for our lives,’ said Gilles Balland, who had travelled from his farm the south west of the country, close to the Spanish border.

‘Farmers are committing suicide, and all of us are struggling to stay in business – it’s the same everywhere,’ said Mr Balland.’That’s why this siege will go on for as long as it takes.’

And Stéphane Sanchez, director of France’s FNSEA agriculture union, said ‘the siege of Paris’ had been prepared with ‘quasi-military’ precision.

There were similar sieges in other cities and towns, including Lyon, Limoges and Toulouse, where massive traffic jams built up and food deliveries were cancelled.

The State Department paused additional funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) after the Israeli government accused 12 UNRWA workers of being involved in the October 7 Hamas attack.

A press statement from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the Biden administration was “extremely troubled by the allegations.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “to emphasize the necessity of a thorough and swift investigation of this matter.”

UNRWA has already terminated the staffers and opened an investigation into the allegations. “The Israeli authorities have provided UNRWA with information about the alleged involvement of several UNRWA employees in the horrific attacks on Israel on October 7,” said UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini. “To protect the agency’s ability to deliver humanitarian assistance, I have taken the decision to immediately terminate the contracts of these staff members and launch an investigation in order to establish the truth without delay.”

Many have noted that UNRWA provides life-saving aid to more than 2 million Palestinians in Gaza.

“Based on unproven allegations alone, the U.S. has cut off funding to UNRWA, one of few groups which provides crucial on the ground aid to Palestinians,” said the antiwar group CODEPINK. “Yet, as Israel commits war crime after war crime, the U.S. continues sending weapons.”

“The US is collectively punishing Palestinians, who rely on UNRWA to survive, based on Israeli allegations against 0.0004% of UNRWA’s staff. Outrageous,” said the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU).

The Biden administration’s announcement comes on the same day that the UN’s top court ordered Israel to prevent genocidal acts Gaza and a U.S. court began hearing a lawsuit accusing Israel of genocide.

Commentators questioned the State Department’s timing across social media.

“So, the US State Dept drops a rather significant statement on (unsubstantiated) allegations against UNRWA workers and pulling funding on the day of the ICJ ruling which finds sufficient evidence for plausible genocidal acts—- and decides there’s no need for a press briefing,” wrote AJ+’s Sana Saeed. “Honestly, this would be masterful manufacturing of the news if it wasn’t so transparent.”

“The US chose to stop funds to UNRWA only an hour after the ICJ decision,” tweeted USCPR Organizing & Advocacy Director Iman Abid. “Israel kills over 33,000 Palestinians and the US still continues to negotiate an increase in funding to Israel. I don’t know what more you need to know about this administration.”

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant praised the move on Twitter. “Major changes need to take place so that international efforts, funds and humanitarian initiatives don’t fuel Hamas terrorism and the murder of Israelis,” he wrote. “Terrorism under the guise of humanitarian work is a disgrace to the UN and the principles it claims to represent.”

In December, UNRWA announced that Israel’s onslaught against Gaza had killed 142 employees of the organization.

Slovakia Prime Minister launches investigation into “whole covid circus” and chooses “anti-vaxxer” to lead it

Rhoda Wilson

“Have you seen the statistics on how our deaths from various cardiovascular events have risen because of vaccinations?” Prime Minister Robert Fico asked the Slovak parliament.

“The Slovak public simply needs an answer. Needs an answer about vaccination, what it actually was. Why people were vaccinated with various experimental vaccines. Why all sorts of drugs were pushed into people,” he said.

“We have decided to create an Office of the Government Plenipotentiary to deal with these issues,” he said. Adding that the Plenipotentiary or Proxy, Dr. P Peter Kotlár, who had been appointed “today” had also been empowered to obtain information from various institutions.

“We will publish and tell the Slovak public what really happened during this covid period,”  Mr. Fico said.

“We know one thing today: the previous governments have completely failed covid-19 and have 21,000 dead people on their hands and have made, apparently, a huge amount of money on the unnecessary purchase of various medical devices [supplies] and vaccines.”

We have been unable to definitively ascertain when Prime Minister Fico made his speech.  The earliest post we could find was a tweet in German dated 23 January 2024. However, as you will read in the text below the video, Dr. Kotlár was appointed on 18 January, suggesting that this is when Mr. Fico made this speech in parliament announcing an investigation into the “whole covid circus.”

Imran Khan handed 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets

Hannah Ellis-Petersen

Former Pakistan prime minister condemns trial as ‘a joke’ amid crackdown on his political party in run-up to general election.

Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for leaking official secrets, amid a crackdown on his political party prior to upcoming elections.

The sentence is the harshest yet against Khan, who has been held in jail since August.

The case relates to a diplomatic cable that allegedly went missing while in his possession. Khan had publicly cited the cable as proof there was a conspiracy behind his fall from power in 2022 but had denied taking it from the ministry of foreign affairs.

The legal proceedings were highly unusual. They were held not in a courtroom but in the prison in Rawalpindi where Khan is being held, and were conducted behind closed doors, which Khan’s lawyers protested was unconstitutional.

The trial was described by Khan as “a joke” and a sham, as both the prosecution and defence teams were government-appointed lawyers and Khan’s lawyers were not allowed to cross-examine witnesses. Khan’s request that senior army figures testify as witnesses was also refused by the court.

“It was obvious that it was a predetermined decision and verdict, Imran Khan’s legal team was not even given a chance to speak,” said Syed Zulfiqar Bukhari, Imran Khan’s former adviser. “This was only done in such a rush to convict Imran Khan prior to the upcoming election. The hearings were not done lawfully and we will challenge it in the high court.”

Khan’s deputy, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who had also pleaded not guilty in the same case, was sentenced to 10 years under the official secrets act. Their lawyers said they would be appealing against the ruling.

The 10-year sentence handed to Khan on Tuesday is just the latest saga to befall the former prime minister since he was toppled from power in April 2022 and began publicly blaming Pakistan’s powerful army generals for orchestrating his downfall.

After accusing the army establishment of having a grudge against him and ordering his imprisonment, Khan was sentenced to three years in jail in August in a separate corruption case and was arrested. A judge later suspended the sentence but Khan was kept in jail after more charges were brought against him relating to the missing diplomatic cable.

Khan has denied any wrongdoing and alleged that the cases against him were to prevent from running in the general election, which will be held on 8 February but has already been tarred by accusations of pre-poll rigging.

Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party remain highly popular among voters. However, Khan’s convictions mean he is barred from running while PTI has faced a months-long crackdown by the government and the military which has prevented it from being able to freely campaign.

Thousands of rank and file members have been detained, harassed and prevented from holding rallies while almost all senior leadership were arrested or allegedly pressured into leaving the party.

In the buildup to next week’s election, the election commission banned PTI from using its signature symbol of the cricket bat – which the party has alleged is a ploy to obstruct its campaigning – and rejected PTI candidates from running. Instructions have also been issued to journalists and television news channels not to mention PTI as part of their election coverage.

With Khan behind bars, critics and analysts say next week’s election is likely to be undemocratic and lack legitimacy.

The frontrunner is widely accepted to be the three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is said to have the backing of the country’s powerful military establishment. The courts recently cleared Sharif of a lifetime ban from politics, paving the way for his return to power for a fourth time. The military has denied any involvement and said it remains apolitical.

Sick to Death: Unhealthy Food and Failed Technologies

Colin Toddhunter

The world is experiencing a micronutrient food and health crisis. Micronutrient deficiency now affects billions of people. Micronutrients are key vitamins and minerals and deficiencies can cause severe health conditions. They are important for various functions, including blood clotting, brain development, the immune system, energy production and bone health, and play a critical role in disease prevention.

The root of the crisis is due to an increased reliance on ultra processed foods (‘junk food’) and the way that modern food crops are grown in terms of the seeds used, the plants produced, the synthetic inputs required (fertilisers, pesticides etc) and the effects on soil.

In 2007, nutritional therapist David Thomas noted a precipitous change in the USA towards convenience and pre-prepared foods often devoid of vital micronutrients yet packed with a cocktail of chemical additives, including colourings, flavourings and preservatives.

He noted that between 1940 and 2002 the character, growing methods, preparation, source and ultimate presentation of basic staples have changed significantly to the extent that trace elements and micronutrient contents have been severely depleted. Thomas added that ongoing research clearly demonstrates a significant relationship between deficiencies in micronutrients and physical and mental ill health.

Prior to the Green Revolution, many of the older crops that were displaced carried dramatically higher counts of nutrients per calorie. For instance, the iron content of millet is four times that of rice, and oats carry four times more zinc than wheat. As a result, between 1961 and 2011, the protein, zinc and iron contents of the world’s directly consumed cereals declined by 4%, 5% and 19%, respectively.

The authors of a 2010 paper in the International Journal of Environmental and Rural Development state that cropping systems promoted by the Green Revolution have resulted in reduced food-crop diversity and decreased availability of micronutrients. They note that micronutrient malnutrition is causing increased rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and osteoporosis in many developing nations. They add that soils are increasingly affected by micronutrient disorders.

In 2016, India’s Central Soil Water Conservation Research and Training Institute reported that the country was losing 5,334 million tonnes of soil every year due to soil erosion because of indiscreet and excessive use of fertilisers, insecticides and pesticides over the years.  On average, 16.4 tonnes of fertile soil is lost every year per hectare. It concluded that the non-judicious use of synthetic fertilisers had led to the deterioration of soil fertility causing loss of micro and macronutrients leading to poor soils and low yields.

The high-input, chemical-intensive Green Revolution with its hybrid seeds and synthetic fertilisers and pesticides helped the drive towards greater monocropping and has resulted in less diverse diets and less nutritious foods. Its long-term impact has led to soil degradation and mineral imbalances, which, in turn, have adversely affected human health.

But micronutrient depletion is not just due to a displacement of nutrient-dense staples in the diet or unhealthy soils. Take wheat, for example. Rothamsted Research in the UK has evaluated the mineral concentration of archived wheat grain and soil samples from the Broadbalk Wheat Experiment. The experiment began in 1843, and their findings show significant decreasing trends in the concentrations of zinc, copper, iron and magnesium in wheat grain since the 1960s.

The researchers say that  the concentrations of these four minerals remained stable between 1845 and the mid 1960s but have since decreased significantly by 20-30%. This coincided with the introduction of Green Revolution semi-dwarf, high-yielding cultivars. They noted that the concentrations in soil used in the experiment have either increased or remained stable. So, in this case, soil is not the issue.

A 2021 paper that appeared in the journal of Environmental and Experimental Botany reported that the large increase in the proportion of the global population suffering from zinc and iron deficiency over the last four decades has occurred since the Green Revolution and the introduction of its cultivars.

Reflecting the findings of Rothamsted Research in the UK, a recent study led by Indian Council of Agricultural Research scientists found the grains eaten in India have lost food value. They conclude that many of today’s crops fail to absorb sufficient nutrients even when soil is healthy.

A recent article on the Down to Earth website reported on this study that found that rice and wheat, which meet over 50% of the daily energy requirements of people in India, have lost up to 45% of their food value in the past 50 years or so.

The concentration of essential nutrients like zinc and iron has decreased by 33% and 27% in rice and by 30% and 19% in wheat, respectively. At the same time, the concentration of arsenic, a toxic element, in rice has increased by 1,493%.

Down to Earth cites research by the Indian Council of Medical Research that indicates a 25% rise in non-communicable diseases among the Indian population from 1990 to 2016. Estimates show that India is home to one-third of the two billion global population suffering from micronutrient deficiency. This is because modern-bred cultivars of rice and wheat are less efficient in sequestering zinc and iron, regardless of their abundance in soils. Plants have lost their capacity to take up nutrients from the soil.

Increasing prevalence of diabetes, childhood leukaemia, childhood obesity, cardiovascular disorders, infertility, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, mental illnesses and so on have all been shown to have some direct relationship to diet and specifically micronutrient deficiency.

The large increase in the proportion of the global population suffering from zinc and iron deficiency over the last four decades has coincided with the global expansion of high-yielding, input-responsive cereal cultivars released in the post-Green Revolution era.

Agriculture and policy analyst Devinder Sharma says that high yield is inversely proportionate to plant nutrition: the drop in nutrition levels is so much that the high-yielding new wheat varieties have seen a steep fall in copper content, an essential trace mineral, by as much as 80%, and some nutritionists ascribe this to a rise in cholesterol-related incidences across the world.

India is self-sufficient in various staples, but many of these foodstuffs are high calorie-low nutrient and have led to the displacement of more nutritionally diverse cropping systems and more nutrient-dense crops.

The importance of agronomist William Albrecht should not be overlooked here and his work on healthy soils and healthy people. In his experiments, he found that cows fed on less nutrient-dense crops ate more while cows that ate nutrient-rich grass stopped eating once their nutritional intake was satisfied. This may be one reason why we see rising rates of obesity at a time of micronutrient food insecurity.

It is interesting that, given the above discussion on the Green Revolution’s adverse impacts on nutrition, the paper New Histories of the Green Revolution (2019) by Prof. Glenn Stone debunks the claim that the Green Revolution boosted productivity: it merely put more (nutrient-deficient) wheat into the Indian diet at the expense of other food crops. Stone argues that food productivity per capita showed no increased or even actually decreased.

With this in mind, the table below makes for interesting reading. The data is provided by the National Productivity Council India (an autonomous body of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry).

As mentioned earlier with reference to Albrecht, obesity has become a concern worldwide, including in India. This problem is multi-dimensional and, as alluded to, excess caloric intake and nutrient-poor food (and sedentary lifestyles) is a factor, leading to the consumption of sugary, fat-laden ultra processed food in an attempt to fill the nutritional gap. But there is also considerable evidence linking human exposure to agrochemicals with obesity.

The September 2020 paper Agrochemicals and Obesity in the journal Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology summarises human epidemiological evidence and experimental animal studies supporting the association between agrochemical exposure and obesity and outlines possible mechanistic underpinnings for this link.

Numerous other studies have also noted that exposure to pesticides has been associated with obesity and diabetes. For example, a 2022 paper in the journal Endocrine reports that first contact with environmental pesticides occurs during critical phases of life, such as gestation and lactation, which can lead to damage in central and peripheral tissues and subsequently programming disorders early and later in life.

A 2013 paper in the journal Entropy on pathways to modern diseases reported that glyphosate (the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup) and the most popular herbicide used worldwide, enhances the damaging effects of other food borne chemical residues and environmental toxins. The negative impact is insidious and manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body, resulting in conditions associated with a Western diet, which include gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

Despite these findings, campaigner Rosemary Mason has drawn attention to how official government and industry narratives try to divert attention from the role of glyphosate in obesity (and other conditions) by urging the public to exercise and cut down on “biscuits”. In a recent article, Kit Knightly on the OffGuardian website notes how big pharma is attempting to individualise obesity and make millions by pushing its ‘medical cures’ for the condition.

To deal with micronutrient deficiencies, other money-spinning initiatives for industry are being pushed, not least biofortification of foodstuffs and plants and genetic engineering.

Industry narratives have nothing to say about the food system itself, which sees ‘food’ as just another commodity to be rinsed for profit regardless of the impacts on human health or the environment. We simply witness more techno-fix ‘solutions’ being rolled out to supposedly address the impacts of previous ‘innovations’ and policy decisions that benefitted the bottom line of Western agribusiness (and big pharma).

Quick techno-fixes do not offer genuine solutions to the problems outlined above. Such solutions involve challenging corporate power that shapes narratives and policies to suit its agenda. Healthy food, healthy people and healthy societies are not created at some ever-sprawling life sciences park that specialises in manipulating food and the human body (for corporate gain) under the banner of ‘innovation’ and ‘health’ while leaving intact the power relations that underpin bad food and ill health.

A radical overhaul of the food system is required, from how food is grown to how society should be organised. This involves creating food sovereignty, encouraging localism, local markets and short supply chains, rejecting neoliberal globalisation, supporting smallholder agriculture and land reform and incentivising agroecological practices that build soil fertility, use and develop high-productive landraces and a focus on nutrition per acre rather than increased grain size, ‘yield’ and ‘output’.

All Their Stupid Ideas Can be Reversed and We Will Make the Deserts Bloom

Did none of the Masters of the Universe take Marketing 101? I know it’s a quasi-discipline, much déclassé, for the peons in flyover country who sell widgets to live, but it does determine the world. What do you want to buy with your disposable income? What food, what house, what car, what do your children lust after?  Shopping decisions determine the shape of the real world, where real things happen. For some people, it’s their only opportunity for self-determination, and take it they will. This fundamental human characteristic is described perfectly by a graph, a chart. The Marketing Curve has been around for fifty years, and its one assumption is that human desire is the primary driver of the economy.

We are divided into forerunners, innovators, early adopters and late adopters and it holds true for digital products, politics, vacations, and health decisions, across the board. You cannot overturn it, you cannot say, “people must like this and do this because I am willing to spend a few billion to brainwash them.” No. Because some renegade soul will say, “I want to move to the country and raise heritage beef rather than swan around New York, London, Paris, Munich going to night clubs and working for a multinational where I destroy the weak and help the strong.”

And then all of a sudden there are handfuls of people hiving off the swarm and starting their own thing. And then, presto, like last year, 66 percent of Americans would, if they could, move to the country or a rural subdivision and become more independent of the murderous cabal that forgot the marketing curve. That this is the exact opposite of what the U.N./W.E.F. want –  which is to force people into fifteen minute prison cities with rural areas left to carbon sinks – is just another example of reality flowing like water around fascist-erected obstacles.

How on God’s green earth, did central planners miss the food revolution of the past twenty years? Did they think only they were foodies? Did they miss the restaurants, the farmers’ markets, the parade of cooking shows, the pallets of new cookbooks shipped every year?  The geometric growth of nutritional experts? The armies of food stars?

I guess they did, because who needs market research when you have the W.E.F/U.N, the CIA, Fifth Generation warfare, obedient Hollywood and the New York publishing industry all turned towards propaganda?

Recently, Netflix released — just in time for the Season of the Diet — “You Are What You Eat,” a series that via hectoring, pleasure-starved, women, tells us why we should all be vegan.  But that ship has sailed. Vegan may work for pre-modern peasants, or for the ill, but the innovators and forerunners in food have embraced full fat dairy, grass fed beef, pasture raised chicken, free range eggs and local vegetables. They don’t even eat supermarket organic anymore, because it is grown wrong.

Did the WEF drones really think those people were going to eat bugs and fake meat?  Jordan Peterson may have made the all-meat diet breakthrough, but he has shown that the nutrients we most need today, are within meat, within traditional food. The beefcake community, gym rats, performance addicts, the ambitious have all followed suit. Even the Gwyneth people are re-integrating healthy meats, full-fat dairy, preferably raw. Supermarket milk is called dead milk. That means, according to the marketing curve, that within ten years, every middle class person on earth will be eating that way.  And what does that mean for the land?

Instead of the now emptying and desiccating countryside, it means making the deserts bloom. For the past twenty years, a host of new rancher/scientists have been experimenting with soil restoration using cattle. Starting with Allan Savory in Zimbabwe, and migrating swiftly to America, where Savory has two experimental ranches, and flowing out like a hundred tributaries, ranchers and farmers, young and old are restoring the earth. By which I mean, the soil. It took Savory a good decade to discover the process of restoration, how to turn the denuded lands of Africa to proliferating vegetation and health, but he, and others think that our ruined earth, the deserts created by man by over-production, even the great deserts of the Americas, the deserts of the once-fertile crescent, can be brought back to life, to the hanging gardens of Babylon.  Seventy percent of desertification happened before the modern age. Savory et al think they can bloom again.

Wouldn’t it be lovely?

One has to pause and pay a little grief tribute to the fiendish and death-dealing turn of the environmental movement. Ireland’s dictate to kill 200,000 cows over the next three years being an excellent example. The functionaries of the movement have ranged through the earth destroying one rural economy after another, turning one forest or range to wildfire and invasive weed. In sharp contrast, soil restoration will not only bring back a healthy bio-system, turn food into its once nutritious self, restore rural life and ground water. Individual farmers and ranchers, not bureaucrats with failed ideas that are fifty years old and require bullying and gun-toting BLM rangers.

This is how broken the earth is: denuded, poisoned, and packed tight by industrial agriculture, rainwater streams off to the sea, and tons of fertilizer must be added every year. Farmers must till deeper and deeper to find live earth to plant. In contrast, restoration means no weeding, no fertilizer, just the hooves of cattle and sheep that break the crust, and over years, with their manure, restore a lost community of arthropods beneath us.

In county after county, young men and women are doing just that. It means more cattle, grazing in a new way, requiring actual cowboys. As an example, what a new rancher will do, is section his rangeland, allow the cows into graze a 50-acre plot, then move them before they eat the roots, into another. The former pasture has been fertilized, the earth broken by hooves, and it starts to live again, without expensive additives. The soil substructure begins to rebuild itself. Productivity soars. The aquifers are restored.

While neither I or any of my associates accept the catastrophic anthropogenic “climate change” narrative, if only 11 percent of current farmland were turned to restoration, all of the supposed excess carbon emissions of man would be absorbed. And food would be nutritious again. Note to the WEFers: get on board or go extinct.

Russia to Supply Weapons to Texas if needed to Fight Biden Border Heist

Russia may supply heavy weapons to Texas so as to defend itself and its Border from any attempt by Biden to forcibly re-open the Texas Border to illegal aliens.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya said publicly : “It is important to understand that by supplying weapons to Texas, Russia does not become a party to the conflict.”

This was a priceless thing for Russia to say given it is the exact language used by the US and NATO when those entities supply weapons to Ukraine, to fight Russia.  Recall too, the entire Ukraine thing started because Ukraine began to use its (federal) troops against two Oblasts (states) Luhansk and Donetsk.  So the parallels between Ukraine/NATO-Russia   and now Texas-Russia / US are . . . perfect.

In one statement by Russia, the entire Texas/Biden Border Heist changed dramatically.

Houthis Set Oil Tanker Ablaze While Biden Tries to Woo China

Mike Whitney

On Friday, Houthi militants fired an anti-ship ballistic missile from mainland Yemen striking a British oil tanker and setting it ablaze. “US Central Command said the Marlin Luanda had issued a distress call and reported damage” but no casualties were reported. The attack represents a significant escalation in the deepening conflict between the US-led coalition and the Yemen-based Houthis.

Here’s the question that every American should be asking himself: Is Israel’s war in Gaza strengthening or weakening America’s position in the world?

If there is some material benefit for the United States, then there might be a reasonable argument for continuing to support the policy. But if there is no benefit whatsoever, then the policy should changed.

So, the real question is whether the US gains something from flouting international law and being an active participant in acts of barbarity against a civilian population?

How does America benefit from that?

It doesn’t, in fact, the present arrangement only benefits America’s rivals, like China and Russia, who have steadily grown stronger due to Washington’s erratic and violent behavior. The administration’s blanket support for Israel, has merely accelerated the pace at which nations in the global south and around the world are realigning with Moscow and Beijing. This isn’t a choice that foreign leaders want to make, it’s a choice they are compelled to make in order to guarantee their own security. That’s the bottom line. The idea that a population of 2 million people can be impulsively erased because of the offenses of a small group of militants, terrifies people. And what terrifies them even more is the fact that international law provides no enforceable protection for the people that are getting clobbered.

This is particularly extraordinary in the current case because—as we all know—the population that is being bombed to smithereens is all of a particular ethnicity and religion, (Arab, Muslim) which means they are being targeted for things over which they have no control. Of the two million people that are presently being herded to the Egyptian border, none of them are Jews. That is not a coincidence. That’s discrimination on a scale that should horrify everyone. Imagine if Biden got tired of the daily shootings in Chicago’s South Side and decided to gather all the black people in the country and drive them to the Mexican border where they would rot in tent cities without food, water or medicine. Would that be an acceptable solution?

And, yet, that’s what’s taking place right now in Gaza. Netanyahu says he won’t let up until “Hamas is defeated”. but what does that mean?

It means he is going to continue doing what he’s been doing for the last 110 days.

But, on what basis does he justify these actions. Let me explain what I mean by using a hypothetical:

Let’s say a terrorist organization bombs the Capital building in Washington DC. And, immediately following the bombing, the FBI discovers ironclad proof that the group has been operating out of terrorist cells located in downtown New York City. Now, normally, the FBI would follow certain protocols and methods for apprehending as many of the terrorists as possible while trying to minimize the “collateral damage.” But, this time, the FBI decides to invoke the Israeli method of fighting terrorism by carpet-bombing lower Manhattan with Tomahawk missiles and Daisy Cutters forcing millions of terrified New Yorkers to flee across the border into New Jersey.

Is that a reasonable way of dealing with terrorism? More importantly, can the existence of terrorist cells ever be used as a justification for reducing an entire city to smoldering rubble?

Of course, not. It’s ridiculous, and yet, that’s what Israel is doing. They are flattening all of Gaza in the name of “defeating Hamas.” Who could have imagined that the extermination of an entire civilization could rest on such a flimsy pretext?

One last thing:

It’s not enough that the Biden administration is providing lethal weapons and logistical support to Israel. Now, Biden has decided to wage war against on Houthis, as well. The President objects to the fact that the Houthis have imposed a blockade on Israeli-linked commercial ships in the Red Sea (in order to pressure Israel to end its blockade of food and medicine to the Palestinians.) So, the US and UK have been launching multiple missile strikes on cities and infrastructure in Yemen. The US attacks are intended to persuade the Houthis to abandon their blockade but, so far, there are no signs that they are degrading the Houthis offensive capability at all. In contrast, The Houthi blockade is having significant impact on Israel’s economy while their attacks on commercial ships have steadily intensified. In short, the Houthis appear to be winning.

On Wednesday, the Houthis fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles from the mainland at two container ships transiting the Gulf of Aden. According to a report from CENTCOM two of the missiles were intercepted by a US warship while one landed in the water. According to antiwar.com:

“Later in the day, the Houthis said their forces engaged in a two-hour battle with several US warships. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea claimed the confrontation resulted in a Houthi missile “directly hitting an American warship, but so far, the US has not confirmed the account.”

Bottom line: The Houthi attacks forced the two commercial ships (the Maersk Detroit and the Maersk Chesapeake) to turn-around and beat a hasty retreat. In other words, the Houthi blockade held-up despite the presence of a state-of-the-art AEGIS destroyer (the USS Gravely) that was escorting the ships through the waterway. This is a clear victory for the Houthis and further proof that US naval convoys will not be able to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

But will that nudge Biden towards the bargaining table?

Of course, not. Biden’s not going to throw in the towel. He’s going to up-the-ante like US presidents always do. So, things are going to get progressively worse. Bet on it.

Here’s more from Sal Mercogliano, host of You Tube’s “What’s going On With Shipping”. Mercogliano is a former merchant mariner and teaches courses in maritime history. This is a blurb from Thursday’s show:

The Houthis have done something unheard of…. They have interdicted 11% of world trade and they are forcing it to go around Africa. You’ve got to go back to the world wars to find a naval power to emerge that makes trade lanes bend and interdict supplies. That’s what the Houthis have done. And they are doing it with Iranian hand-me-down missiles duct-taped together and being launched and hitting (their targets) The only savings grace, is that the missiles are so crappy, that they don’t blow up like they’re supposed to.

Understand, this won’t last long, because once there is the realization that the Houthis are not damaging the ships enough, then you’ll see a resumption of trade and the Houthi will ramp it up again. and they will try to sink and kill crew members. Understand, I don’t think they are doing this consciously right now, it’s just that the missiles just aren’t that great. If, they see the potential here, then they will do it. Understand, this is a targeted attack against the United States of America. This is what led to our entry into World War 1.
Houthi Attack 2 US Containerships – Maersk Detroit and Maersk Chesapeake, You Tube; Minute 15:30

Once again, is this going to escalate?

Of course, it’s going to escalate. Because now it’s a matter of national pride. The US cannot allow itself to seen as caving in to a ragtag militia that has essentially seized control of one of the world’s most critical transit corridors. That cannot stand! Which is why the US launched its ninth massive missile attack on Yemen on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Houthis responded tit-for-tat by firing on British oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden. Here’s a recap from CNN:

An oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden is on fire after a missile attack by Yemen’s Houthi militants, in the latest incident linked to the Iran-backed group in the key shipping route.

The operator of the British oil tanker Marlin Luanda said Friday the vessel had been “struck by a missile in the Gulf of Aden after transiting the Red Sea,” and that “firefighting equipment on board is being deployed to suppress and control the fire caused in one cargo tank on the starboard side.”

The Iran-backed militants claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in a statement that they had fired on the tanker in response to the “American-British aggression against our country [Yemen]” and in support of the Palestinian people. Oil tanker on fire in Gulf of Aden after Houthi missile attack, CNN

So, now an oil tanker has been hit which means the stakes keep getting higher all the time. Is this what Biden had in mind when he deployed his flotilla to the Red Sea? Did he really want another war 8 thousand miles away from America’s shores?

And who is winning this war: The United States or the Houthis?

If you are in doubt about that question, just take a look at this clip from the Wall Street Journal:

“Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser of the USA, is on his way to Thailand – where he will meet with Wang Yi, the foreign minister of China, in an attempt to pressure him to influence the Houthis to stop the attacks in the Red Sea”

WTF? So, Biden wants China to pressure the Houthis to ease the blockade? Is that what’s going on?

No, not exactly. It’s actually much worse than that. Here’s the story from Reuters:

The United States has asked China to urge Tehran to rein in the Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea but has seen little sign of help from Beijing, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing U.S. officials.

The U.S. has repeatedly raised the matter with top Chinese officials in the past three months, the report said. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and his deputy, Jon Finer, discussed the issue in meetings this month in Washington with Liu Jianchao, head of the International Liaison Department of China’s Communist Party, the newspaper said.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also raised the issue with his Chinese counterpart, the report said, adding U.S. officials believe there was little evidence that China had put any pressure on Iran to restrain the Houthis beyond a mild statement Beijing issued last week… US asks China to urge Iran to curb Red Sea attacks by Houthis -FT, Reuters

Let me get this straight: The United States wants China to urge Tehran to rein in the Iranian-aligned Houthis?

Really? But didn’t Biden designate China as America’s Enemy Number 1 in his 2022 National Security Strategy? And hasn’t Biden been trying to enlist more and more nations into his anti-China coalition? And hasn’t Biden deployed the Navy multiple times to hector and harass China in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait? But now he’s sent his envoys to beg for a favor?

What gall!

But—despite what you read in the western media—China isn’t ‘falling for it’, mainly because China has had the right policy from the very beginning. So, there’s no reason to change a thing. China opposed Houthi attacks on commercial vessels from the onset. That hasn’t changed. By the same token, they oppose US military intervention and think that the US deliberately misled the Security Council to get a resolution that they used as a pretext for attacking Yemen. China opposes that, too, and they always have.
