According to Whitehall sources cited by Middle East Eye correspondent Imran Mulla, the United Kingdom is poised to announce a sweeping ban on trade and investment tied to illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Scheduled for formal rollout on Tuesday, the policy is designed to bring British trade policy into direct compliance with the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) landmark July 2024 advisory opinion, which ruled the entire Israeli occupation unlawful.
The anticipated measures are expected to prohibit economic activity and investment in businesses operating within illegal settlements, closing a long-standing loophole that allowed goods from occupied territories to skirt rigorous enforcement.
While legal advocates and UN special rapporteurs have emphasized that third-party states carry a binding obligation under international law not to render aid or assistance in maintaining illegal colonial enterprises, the impending move has already drawn fierce pushback from pro-Israel lobbies and foreign capitals intent on shielding the occupation infrastructure from economic accountability.
