[Today marks the 59th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X. See CovertAction Magazine’s in-depth exploration of the crime as an addendum to this piece.—Editors]

In mid-November, three daughters of Malcolm X (aka el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz) accused the CIA, FBI, the New York Police Department and the Department of Justice with involvement in the 1965 assassination of the activist leader.

The daughters, spearheaded by Ilyasah Shabazz and represented by Attorney Ben Crump, filed a $100 million lawsuit in conjunction with the Malcolm X estate, claiming these agencies were aware of and involved in the assassination, and failed to stop it.

Their lawsuit claims that the New York Police Department (NYPD), working with federal law enforcement agencies, arrested Malcom X’s own security guards days before the assassination, while also removing their own police security detail that was present at all of Malcolm’s events in the previous year or more. These agencies also had undercover agents at the scene of the assassination who failed to protect Malcolm X.[1]

U.S. Intelligence Documents and Actions Support Daughters’ Claims About the FBI

An FBI memorandum of March 4, 1968, discussed the “long range goals” including: “Prevent the rise of a ‘messiah’ who could unify, and electrify, the militant black nationalist movement.” Malcolm X might have been such a “messiah.” This and other documents presented how Malcolm X had clearly emerged as U.S. Intelligence’s top threat.[2]

Malcolm’s influence over large numbers of American Blacks first came through his Nation of Islam (NOI) leadership as its national spokesman. The FBI began their surveillance file on him early in the 1950s.[3]

As early as 1958, New York detectives shot up Malcolm X’s office, for which the city settled with Malcolm in a $24 million lawsuit. FBI undercover agent John X Ali, who infiltrated the NOI, could provide the floor plan since he was living with Malcolm at the time. [4]

By the start of the 1960s, FBI documents revealed that U.S. intelligence wrote up to several reports a week on Malcolm due to his radical influence over Blacks.

Agent John X Ali also reportedly played a part in orchestrating the firebombing of Malcolm’s house in 1965. Ali had risen to a national secretary assignment, one of the highest leadership positions in the NOI. NOI leader Elijah Muhammad’s son, Wallace Muhammad, said several FBI undercover agents in the NOI national staff helped Ali make that rise, as also attested to by FBI documents.[5]

Evidence of the New York Police and CIA’s Involvement in the Assassination of Malcolm X

High-level CIA whistleblower Victor Marchetti explained in a 1974 expose that the CIA director was “the titular chief of the entire intelligence community.”[6]

This would include the FBI and the Bureau of Special Services and Investigation (BOSS), the NYPD’s special intelligence unit working against leftist political groups.

In the 1960s, BOSS carried out investigations and operations against political activists and was spearheaded by Lieutenant Angelo Galante who had previously worked for the CIA, specializing in fighting against revolutionary guerrilla forces behind enemy lines.[7]

From the late 1950s on, Malcolm X’s leadership of the New York NOI mosque also helped him meet with Third World revolutionaries and African leaders at the New York-based United Nations. The CIA grew concerned about Malcolm’s influence amongst these leaders. African leaders soon hosted Malcolm X and had him take part in their political decisions.

Malcolm believed that U.S. Intelligence said CIA agents made their presence obvious to try to intimidate him as he traveled through Africa. They did not want him to present a planned United Nations appeal to African leaders that the U.S. was violating American Blacks’ human rights.[8]

In late July 1964 Malcolm X ate at a restaurant in Cairo, Egypt, where he said he felt poison in his food. He realized that he recognized the waiter as someone he had seen in New York. Rushed to the hospital, he was barely saved by a stomach pumping. The attending doctor said there was a toxic substance in his food. Malcolm had been concerned about death threats from the NOI he had left that year but he knew that they did not have a global spy capacity.[9]

Several other disclosures supporting CIA attempts on Malcolm X’s life include one from a high-level African diplomat. He said that the French Counter-Espionage Department reported that the CIA planned Malcolm’s murder, and France barred Malcolm for the first time in fear of getting scapegoated for the assassination.[10]

Furthermore, the FBI Director wrote a confidential memo on Malcolm’s travel plans through Britain and France. He sent it to the CIA Director, the Army Intelligence (Intel) chief, the Naval Intel Director, and the Air Force Counterintel chief, as well as Intel chiefs in London and Paris.[11] One such memorandum on Malcolm and African leaders went directly to the CIA director of covert action, Richard Helms, who had a key role in assassination plots.[12]

The FBI and Malcolm X’s Assassination in New York and Reversal of Convictions in 2021

Gunmen carried out Malcolm X’s assassination on February 21, 1965, in the Audubon Ballroom in New York City. An FBI document said (undercover agent) John Ali met with Talmadge Hayer (aka Thomas Hagan), one of the gunmen who shot Malcolm X, the night before the assassination.[13]

As the Shabazz daughters’ lawsuit states, at the Audubon Ballroom where Malcolm X gave his last speech, uniformed police left the area despite usually filling the hall inside and outside where Malcolm gave speeches.[14]

Meanwhile, the New York Herald Tribune also said a “high police official” confirmed that several undercover BOSS agents were in the Ballroom audience at the assassination.[15]

In 1969, undercover BOSS police agent Gene Roberts testified that he was the first to arrive at Malcolm’s body and he “proceeded to give Malcolm X mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.”[16]

Gene Roberts contradicted any good intentions in his later interviews and actions. For example, in interviews years later he described the actions of his wife Joan Roberts who was with him at the event. When Malcolm X was shot, Malcolm’s wife Betty Shabazz first tried to cover her daughters and screamed, “They’re killing my husband!”[17]

When the shooting stopped, Shabazz, a nurse, went to run to her husband, but Joan Roberts grabbed her. Shabazz struggled to get free, threw Roberts into a wall and ran to Malcolm. Gene Roberts said he was there checking Malcolm’s pulse. He turned to Shabazz and said Malcolm was dead.[18]

The actions of Roberts parallel the actions of undercover infiltrator, military intelligence agent Marrell McCollough in Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. McCollough disclosed how he raced to and knelt over MLK as he lay bleeding from the shooting.

An MLK friend, writer William Pepper, noted that McCollough was “apparently checking him for life signs,” making sure the assassination was successful and signaling to military intelligence that “the army snipers there as backup shooters” were not needed.[19]

Undercover agent Gene Roberts later infiltrated Malcolm X’s followers in the Harlem Black Panthers and unsuccessfully attempted to have them convicted of many charges.

And finally, the New York Herald Tribune and The New York Times reported that, just after the shooting of Malcolm, police detained two people whom the crowd had grabbed. Patrolman Thomas Hoy said that Malcolm’s supporters grabbed one suspect and he grabbed a second suspect being chased by some people. Hoy further said, “the crowd began beating me and the [second] suspect” in the Ballroom. In the following days, the Herald Tribune, the Times and a mass of media accounts never mentioned a second suspect.[20]

In 1966, New York authorities convicted three men of assassinating Malcolm: Talmadge Hayer (aka Thomas Hagan, later Mujahid Abdul Halim), Muhammad Abdul Aziz and Khalil Islam. The latter two had their convictions overturned in 2021, with a re-investigation by The Innocence Project finding FBI documents pointing to other suspects and police ignoring a warning given to New York’s Daily News that Malcolm X would be killed that day.

The WHO Cannot Be Saved

The WHO Cannot Be Saved

By David Bell and Ramesh Hakur

As humans, we commonly consider ourselves, our beliefs, and our work of particular importance. It is not surprising, then, that when we form institutions, those within them seek to promote the institution’s relevance, expand their work, and centralize decision-making within their own ‘particularly important’ group. Few want to divest power and resources, let alone put themselves and their colleagues out of a job. This fatal flaw infects all bureaucracies, from local to national and regional to international.

It is unsurprising, then, that the World Health Organization (WHO), an international health bureaucracy of over 9,000 staff, a quarter of them in Geneva, should suffer the same problems. The WHO was originally intended primarily to transfer capacity to struggling states emerging from colonialism and address their higher burdens of disease but lower administrative and financial capabilities. This prioritized fundamentals like sanitation, good nutrition, and competent health services that had brought long life to people in wealthier countries. Its focus now is more on stocking shelves with manufactured commodities. Its budget, staffing, and remit expand as actual country need and infectious disease mortality decline over the years.

While major gaps in underlying health equality remain, and were recently exacerbated by the WHO’s Covid-19 policies, the world is a very different place from 1948 when it was formed. Rather than acknowledging progress, however, we are told we are simply in an ‘inter-pandemic period,’ and the WHO and its partners should be given ever more responsibility and resources to save us from the next hypothetical outbreak (like Disease-X). Increasingly dependent on ‘specified’ funding from national and private interests heavily invested in profitable biotech fixes rather than the underlying drivers of good health,  the WHO looks more and more like other public-private partnerships that channel taxpayer money to the priorities of private industry.

Pandemics happen, but a proven natural one of major impact on life expectancy has not happened since pre-antibiotic era Spanish flu over a hundred years ago. We all understand that better nutrition, sewers, potable water, living conditions, antibiotics, and modern medicines protect us, yet we are told to be ever more fearful of the next outbreak. Covid happened, but it overwhelmingly affected the elderly in Europe and the Americas. Moreover, it looks, as the US government now makes clear, almost certainly a laboratory mistake by the very pandemic industry that is promoting the WHO’s new approach.

Collaborating on health internationally remains popular, as it should be in a heavily interdependent world. It also makes sense to prepare for severe rare events – most of us buy insurance. But we don’t exaggerate flood risk in order to expand the flood insurance industry, as anything we spend is money taken from our other needs.

Public health is no different. If we were designing a new WHO now, no sane model would base its funding and direction primarily on the interests and advice of those who profit from illness. Rather, these would be based on accurate estimates of localized risks of the big killer diseases. The WHO was once independent of private interests, mostly core-funded, and able to set rational priorities. That WHO is gone.

Over the past 80 years, the world has also changed. It makes no sense now to base thousands of health staff in one of the world’s most expensive (and healthiest!) cities, and it makes no sense in a technologically advancing world to keep centralizing control there. The WHO was structured in a time when most mail still went by steamship. It stands increasingly as an anomaly to its mission and to the world in which it works. Would a network of regional bodies tied to their local context not be more responsive and effective than a distant, disconnected, and centralized bureaucracy of thousands?

Amidst the broader turmoil roiling the post-1945 international liberal order, the recent US notice of withdrawal from the WHO presents a unique opportunity to rethink the type of international health institution the world needs, how that should operate, where, for what purpose, and for how long.

What should be the use-by date of an international institution? In the WHO’s case, either health is getting better as countries build capacity and it should be downsizing. Or health is getting worse, in which case the model has failed and we need something more fit for purpose.

The Trump administration’s actions are an opportunity to rebase international health cooperation on widely recognized standards of ethics and human rights. Countries and populations should be back in control, and those seeking profit from illness should have no role in decision-making. The WHO, at nearly 80 years old, comes from a bygone era, and is increasingly estranged from its world. We can do better. Fundamental change in the way we manage international health cooperation will be painful but ultimately healthy.

Trump Accuses Biden Advisors of Treason

Trump accuses Biden advisers of treason
RT
The US president claims aides took advantage of his “cognitively impaired” predecessor

US President Donald Trump has accused senior aides to his predecessor of committing “treason at the highest level” by allegedly exploiting Joe Biden’s cognitive decline in order to implement unauthorized policies that he would never have supported himself.

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump claimed that Biden never advocated for open borders and that the surge in illegal immigration was orchestrated by staffers who effectively “stole” the presidency by taking control of the autopen – a device used to replicate a person’s signature.

“The Joe Biden that everybody knew would never allow drug dealers, gang members, and the mentally insane to come into our Country totally unchecked and unvetted. All anyone has to do is look up his record,” Trump argued, adding that the resulting influx has cost the US “hundreds of billions of dollars.”

“It wasn’t his idea to open the border… It was the people that knew he was cognitively impaired, and that took over the autopen,” he added. “This is TREASON at the highest level!… Something very severe should happen to these treasonous thugs that wanted to destroy our Country, but couldn’t, because I came along.”

Trump’s allegations come amid renewed concerns about Biden’s health, following the recent announcement that he has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 and metastasis to the bone. While Trump publicly wished Biden well, he also questioned the timing and transparency of the disclosure, suggesting that the public was not informed soon enough.

“I’m surprised that… the public wasn’t notified a long time ago, because to get to stage nine, that’s a long time,” Trump told reporters on Monday, questioning how doctors at the White House and Walter Reed hospital could have missed a condition that takes years to develop.

“And the autopen is becoming a very big deal. You know, the autopen is becoming a big deal because it seems that maybe it was the president – whoever operated the autopen,” Trump added, speculating whether the same doctors had overlooked signs of cognitive decline. “In other words, there are things going on that the public wasn’t informed of. And I think somebody’s gonna have to speak to his doctor.”

The autopen has become a focal point in Trump’s broader criticisms of Biden’s presidency. Earlier this year, Trump declared that several last-minute pardons issued by Biden were “void,” alleging that they were signed without his knowledge.

Legal experts note that the use of the autopen by US presidents has historical precedent and is legally valid when authorized. However, Trump maintains that in his predecessor’s case, the device may have been misused by aides acting independently. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer has since launched an investigation into whether senior Biden aides orchestrated a cover-up of the president’s alleged cognitive decline.

Rubio: Syria Facing Collapse

Syria facing collapse – Rubio
RT
A civil war of “epic proportions” could erupt within weeks, the top US diplomat has claimed

Syria could face a surge of violence and total collapse within weeks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told lawmakers in Washington.

The top US diplomat has defended President Donald Trump’s approach to Syria, including the decision to lift unilateral sanctions and meet in person with the new Syrian president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, despite his jihadist background.

”The transitional authority, given the challenges they’re facing, are maybe weeks – not many months – away from potential collapse and a full-scale civil war of epic proportions,” Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday. “Basically, the country is splitting up.”

The secretary blamed former President Bashar Assad for the continued violence since 2011, when a US-backed effort to remove him from power led to a prolonged and bloody conflict.

Rubio said Syria had become “a playground for jihadist groups, including ISIS and others.” Al-Sharaa, who once led the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) under the name Abu Mohammad al-Julani, rose to power after deposing Assad last year.

Although the new Syrian leadership “didn’t pass their background check with the FBI,” Rubio said the US must support them to prevent wider regional instability. He argued that pragmatic foreign policy means that the US human rights agenda is “different in certain parts of the world” than in others.

Lifting sanctions would allow foreign aid into Syria, potentially stabilizing the economy and encouraging millions of displaced Syrians to return, Rubio said. The White House, however, remains uncertain whether its approach will succeed.

”If we engage [the al-Sharaa government], it may work out, it may not work out,” Rubio stated. “If we did not engage them, it was guaranteed to not work out.”

US sanctions had aimed to stymie Assad’s efforts to rebuild the country after he regained control of most of Syria by 2015. Persistent issues had eroded the morale of the Syrian military, which largely refused to defend Damascus when HTS launched its offensive last November.

Al-Sharaa has pledged to uphold Syria’s ethnic and religious diversity as he courts Western backing. However, his rule has been marked by reported massacres of Alawites, Christians, and Assad supporters.

Israel has carried out multiple airstrikes in Syria in recent months, claiming the attacks were intended to defend Druze militias from fighters aligned with the new government.

SCOTUS: Trump Can Deport 350K Venezuelans Biden Allowed To Break The Law

United States Supreme Court

By Bryanna Lyman

The Supreme Court issued an order on Monday agreeing that the Trump administration had the constitutional authority to remove the Biden-era temporary protections for hundreds of thousands of migrants who were allowed to remain in the country under the previous administration.

The court placed a hold on a lower court order that blocked Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem from removing “Temporary Protected Status” (TPS) for Venezuelans. Only Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented. TPS permits migrants to work and live in the country if their native country is deemed unsafe.

The Supreme Court’s decision could mean some 350,000 Venezuelans can be deported.

As reported by The Federalist’s Breccan Thies, three days before President Trump took office, then DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas extended the TPS designation for Venezuelans living in the country. The extension was for 18 months. Noem then “vacated the extension and subsequently terminated TPS for Venezuelans who had registered for it in 2023,” Thies reported.

In response “National TPS Alliance, an organization representing those with TPS, and a group of Venezuelans turned around and sued the Trump administration.” The suit alleged the termination of TPS was race-based — without considering that the United States has the right to decide which foreigners are admitted into the United States.

The Trump administration argued in a subsequent motion that Mayorkas “failed, among other things, to evaluate the key statutory question: whether permitting Venezuelan and Haitian nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is ‘contrary to the national interest.’”

An Obama-appointed judge issued a nationwide injunction, and the Ninth Circuit rejected an appeal by the Trump administration. While the protections were “set to expire on April 7,” the judge, as described by the Associated Press, found that “the expiration threatened to severely disrupt the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and could cost billions in lost economic activity.”

The Trump administration contended that the ruling from the lower court amounted to judicial overreach, an issue that has plagued Trump’s first few months in office.

As crisis grows at U.S. airports, feds are buying replacement parts on eBay or 3D printing them

By Steven Richards

America’s air traffic control system is blinking red with warning after a midair collision, several harrowing outages, and a staffing shortage. Now Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is adding to the worries by revealing the Federal Aviation Administration is resorting to using eBay and 3D printers to replace parts for antiquated computer systems.

The secretary told the the Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday that the technology holding together American airports is so outdated, the federal government does not have reliable suppliers that can replace vital components.

“We do try to buy replacement parts on eBay for this really old equipment,” Duffy told the senators. “Sometimes, we can’t even buy it on eBay, so we’re trying to use 3D printing to craft replacement parts for the system that we use.”

Duffy first drew attention to this ongoing issue last week in an interview with CBS News. He noted the FAA turned to eBay because “we can’t buy parts for new” for the aging equipment.

Because of the worrying state of the nation’s airports, Duffy announced earlier this month an ambitious three-year plan to revamp air traffic control systems with a focus on modernizing communications technology, surveillance systems, and digitization. To do this, the administration will seek “upfront appropriations” from Congress to fund the much-needed updates.

You can read the Transportation Department’s three-year plan below:

Brand New Air Traffic Control System Plan.pdf

The plan emphasizes fast-paced modernization was necessary because risks increased the longer the U.S. remained reliant on the aging systems, especially at a time when air traffic is increasing and spaceflight is making a comeback.

FDA Plans to Require Clinical Trials Before Approving Annual COVID Vax Boosters for Healthy People

The Latest on COVID-19 Boosters – NIH Director's Blog

By Natalia Mittelstadt

The release of updated COVID vaccines for healthy children and adults this fall will likely be delayed.

Food and Drug Administration plans to require new clinical trials before approving annual COVID-19 vaccine boosters for healthy Americans under 65 years old.

The plan appears in a paper published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, in which FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary and Dr. Vinay Prasad, the FDA’s vaccine chief, wrote any new COVID shot must undergo placebo-controlled clinical trials, NBC News reported.

This means that the release of updated COVID vaccines for healthy children and adults this fall will likely be delayed.

While the original COVID shots underwent placebo-controlled trials, the updated boosters only went through smaller studies.

Makary and Prasad wrote that the COVID shot policy “has sometimes been justified by arguing that the American people are not sophisticated enough to understand age- and risk-based recommendations.”

“We reject this view,” they added.

Emmanuel Macron Issues Joint Statement From France, The United Kingdom And Canada Demanding Immediate Palestinian Two State Solution In Gaza

By Geoffrey Grider

Emmanuel Macron issues joint statement between France, United Kingdom and Canada calling for the immediate implementation of Two State Solution in Gaza

If you listened to our Podcast today, then you know that everyone is doing what they’re supposed to be doing regarding the end times. Pope Leo XIV is busy creating a Revived Roman Empire, Donald Trump is helping to create a United States of Islam in the Middle East, and Emmanuel Macron is busy doing what the MOS is supposed to do, create a Palestinian state in Gaza on God’s land. Macron issued a stunning statement today, and you can read it in its entirety below. That’s the memo.

[…]

Not only is Emmanuel Macron going to nearly single-handedly bring in a Palestinian State, the help he has enlisted is also quite noteworthy. President Donald Trump, fresh off his $2.3 trillion dollar bonanza in the Middle East has already promised clandestine support for the Two State Solution. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a huge advocate for a Palestinian State is going to co-chair this event with Macron at the UN in June. Since 2017, NTEB has been calling for Emmanuel Macron to be revealed as the biblical man of sin, and mark your calendars, this June he just may do it. And here’s a fun fact: the UN Two State Conference takes place on the last four days of Spring…TO THE FLIGHT!!!

Emmanuel Macron release joint statement by the leaders of France, the United Kingdom and Canada on the situation in Gaza and the West Bank
This is the official Joint Statement taken directly from the Elysee site in Paris.
FROM THE ELYSEE: We strongly oppose the expansion of Israeli military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable. Israel’s announcement yesterday to allow a minimal amount of food into the Gaza Strip is completely insufficient. We call on the Israeli government to halt its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. This must include engagement with the United Nations to ensure the resumption of aid deliveries in accordance with humanitarian law. We call on Hamas to immediately release the remaining hostages it has so cruelly held since October 7, 2023.

The Israeli government’s refusal to provide essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable and risks violating international humanitarian law. We condemn the abhorrent language recently used by members of the Israeli government and the threat of forced displacement of civilians facing the desperate destruction in Gaza. Permanent forced displacement is a violation of international humanitarian law. Israel suffered a horrific attack on October 7. We have always supported Israel’s right to defend its people against terrorism. But this escalation is completely disproportionate.

We will not stand idly by while the Netanyahu government continues these outrageous actions. If Israel does not halt the new military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete steps in response.

We oppose any attempt to expand settlements in the West Bank. Israel must end settlements, which are illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of Israelis and Palestinians. We will not hesitate to take further action, including targeted sanctions.

We strongly support the efforts of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Only a ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages, and a long-term political solution offer the best hope of ending the agony of the hostages and their families, alleviating the suffering of civilians in Gaza, ending Hamas’s control over Gaza, and paving the way for a two-state solution, in line with the objectives of the June 18 conference in New York, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. These negotiations must succeed, and we must all work toward implementing a two-state solution, as the only way to bring about the lasting peace and security that Israelis and Palestinians deserve and ensure long-term stability in the region.

We will continue to work with the Palestinian Authority, regional partners, Israel, and the United States to reach consensus on arrangements for the future of Gaza, building on the Arab plan. We affirm the important role of the high-level conference on the two-state solution to be held at the United Nations in June in building international consensus around this goal. We are committed to recognizing a Palestinian state as a contribution to achieving a two-state solution and stand ready to work with others to this end.

US. Economy experiencing ‘Death By a Thousand Cuts’, says Deutsche Bank, as Confidence in National Debt Management Erodes

The US Debt—Causes and Consequences | Hoover Institution The US Debt—Causes and Consequences

By Eleanor Pringle

America’s soaring national debt, now over $36.2 trillion, has triggered concern among economists and credit agencies like Moody’s, which recently downgraded the U.S. credit rating amid fears that economic growth won’t keep pace with rising debt and interest payments.

Economists have criticized politicians’ plans to reduce America’s national debt as too little, too late. But analysts are warning that the issue is now coming home to roost, with the once unshakeable confidence in the United States’ fiscal future beginning to erode.

America’s national debt, which currently stands at more than $36.2 trillion, is increasingly rising on economists’ agendas. Their fear is that as the nation’s debt burden increases, alongside the interest payments to service the debt, the economy will not grow fast enough to sustain the spending.

Such fears were reflected in a Moody’s downgrade of U.S. credit last week from Aaa to Aa1. Moody’s justified: “While we recognize the US’ significant economic and financial strengths, we believe these no longer fully counterbalance the decline in fiscal metrics.”

The downgrade is yet another thorn in the side of America’s fiscal health, despite protestations from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that the market should take little heed of Moody’s news.

As Deutsche Bank’s Jim Reid put it in a note seen by Fortune this morning: “Yesterday felt like we were somewhere along the line of a ‘death by a thousand cuts’ with regards to the U.S. fiscal situation. Hard to know where in that thousand we are but probably much nearer a thousand than at zero even as yesterday saw an initial sell-off reverse as the session went on.

“At the end of the day the loss of the final U.S. triple-A rating late on Friday night doesn’t change anything much immediately but it keeps the drip, drip, drip of poor fiscal news building up against the debt sustainability dam in the background.”

President Trump and his cabinet are not blind to the national debt issue. Trump has suggested it could be paid off with the funds from his ‘gold card’ visa scheme, while the overriding message from DOGE (the Department of Government Efficiency) has been efficiency and cost-cutting.

But Trump is maintaining a delicate balance in the deliverables his campaign promises: cutting costs and reducing taxes, which, in turn, reduces the revenues needed to rebalance government spending.

The Trump cabinet is currently encouraging Congress to pass this “big, beautiful bill” of tax cuts. Some of this includes an expansion of the 2017 tax cuts, which are due to expire at the end of 2025, with notable additions such as axes to taxes on tips and overtime pay.

The Trump administration argues that the bill will actually help rebalance the debt-to-GDP ratio. Administrations have two choices to bring the balances into order: reduce the debt or increase GDP.

They say extending the tax cuts will do the latter, arguing their bill will raise short-run real GDP by 3.3 to 3.8% and long-run real GDP by 2.6 to 3.2%.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) disagrees. In an April report, the nonpartisan analyst organization stated that if provisions of the 2017 tax act were extended, thus lowering tax revenues, and with no other changes made to fiscal policy, public debt would reach 220% of GDP by 2025.

This would be 63 points higher than long-term baseline projections without the cuts.

Banking on the Fed
In the event of U.S. debt buyers losing confidence in the country’s ability to repay, America does have a card it can play in the form of the Fed.

The central bank could employ quantitative easing, a move that would likely raise eyebrows, to lower longer-term interest rates and make it easier for the government to continue borrowing.

While the bond market reacted fairly minimally to Moody’s downgrade, UBS adds that should volatility increase at some point, the Fed would likely act.

In a note sent to Fortune today, UBS’s chief investment officer Mark Haefele wrote: “Overall, we view this latest credit action as a headline risk rather than a fundamental shift for markets. We would also expect the Federal Reserve to step in if there were a disorderly or unsustainable increase in bond yields.

“So while the downgrade may lean against some of the recent ‘good news’ momentum, we do not expect it to have a major direct impact on financial markets.”

UK Suspends Free Trade Talks with Israel, Summons Regime’s Ambassador

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy debates at the Parliament over the issue of suspending the trade agreement with Israel, May 20, 2025. (social media)

Press TV

The UK has suspended free trade negotiations with Israel, summoned its ambassador, and announced further sanctions against West Bank settlers after Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was horrified by Israel’s escalation of the war in Gaza.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy told members of Parliament on Tuesday that the “threat of starvation is hanging over hundreds of thousands of civilians.”

He said the UK government will not ignore the “abominable” situation in Gaza and it will take steps to dissuade the Israeli regime from further escalating the war.

“Frankly, it is an affront to the values of the British people. Therefore, today, I am announcing that we have suspended negotiations with this Israeli [regime] on a new free trade agreement.”

Lammy added that war is not the way to free the remaining captives, and called on Israel to end the blockade of humanitarian aid.

The UK Minister for West Asia, Hamish Falconer, also said, “Today I will set out to Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely the government’s opposition to the wholly disproportionate escalation of military activity in Gaza and emphasize that the 11-week block on aid to Gaza has been cruel and indefensible.”

Israel must follow its obligations under International Humanitarian Law and confirm “full, rapid, safe and unhindered” provision of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, Falconer added.

The Israeli military announced last week that it will intensify its attacks on Gaza.

Since May 16, it has conducted a wave of massive aerial assaults and deployed additional troops to the Palestinian territory.
