A quadrilateral meeting between Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia on regional security and stability was held in Tehran.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said President Masoud Pezeshkian met with representatives responsible for defense and security affairs from Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. The meeting was attended by National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said the defense minister’s visit to Tehran was part of efforts by the parties to the Mecca Agreement on joint defense to de-escalate tensions.
The ministry added that the visit aimed to encourage dialogue and diplomatic solutions among the parties to the current crisis and support mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan.
“We look forward to the parties to the crisis engaging positively and pragmatically with the outcomes of the visit and the mediation efforts,” the ministry said, stressing the importance of opening channels of negotiation to prevent a return to military escalation in the region.
It also expressed hope that an agreement would be reached to end the crisis and achieve security and peace in the region and around the world.
Earlier, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tehran was hosting officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, adding that the initiative for the meeting emerged during Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran.
The spokesperson said the meeting could pave the way for establishing regional security through greater cooperation among countries in the region.
He added that efforts by regional countries to develop mechanisms for ensuring security based on their own interests were welcome, emphasizing the importance of initiatives that strengthen their ability to safeguard regional stability and security.
