Representative Michael McCaul backed up earlier claims that Egypt tipped officials off to an impending assault

Three days before Hamas’ large-scale assault on Israel, the Egyptian authorities warned their counterparts in Tel Aviv that such an operation was imminent, US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul told reporters on Wednesday.

“We know that Egypt has warned the Israelis three days prior that an event like this could happen,” McCaul said following a closed-door intelligence briefing on Capitol Hill.

“I don’t want to get too much into classified, but a warning was given,” McCaul continued. “I think the question was at what level.”

The Associated Press reported on Monday that Israeli officials ignored repeated warnings from Cairo that Hamas was planning “something big.” Citing a source within Egyptian intelligence, the news agency claimed that the Israeli government felt that an attack was unlikely to come from Gaza, and would probably take place in the West Bank instead.

The AP report did not specify how recently these warnings were allegedly made.

Hamas militants began firing barrages of rockets into Israel from Gaza on Saturday, with fighters then pouring across the border and raiding Jewish settlements near the Palestinian enclave. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by declaring a state of war and launching airstrikes on Gaza.

Israel has since come under rocket fire from Lebanon and Syria, and as of Wednesday, more than 1,200 Israelis are dead and 3,200 injured, according to government figures. At least 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and more than 5,300 wounded, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Saturday’s surprise attack has been viewed as a catastrophic failure for Israel’s intelligence services, which were previously believed to have eyes and ears throughout Gaza.

Netanyahu has repeatedly denied that he was notified of Hamas’ plans before the onslaught.

Shortly after McCaul spoke to reporters in Washington, an anonymous Egyptian official told the Times of Israel that Cairo’s agents did warn their Israeli counterparts about a planned Hamas attack, but that this warning may not have made it to Netanyahu’s office.

  1. In any conflict, the contestants look for weakness in the adversary, in animals, plants and humans. “Divide and conquer”, and “Know thine enemy,” are classic strategies in war, games, and contests. My mother, who taught me chess, was fond of saying “The best defense is an offense.”

Indeed, strategy depends on seeking opportunities to make a move. It’s possible lots of people had knowledge that a strike would come, but they might not have known from whom, where, or when.

What’s more important is how we react to it, because retaliation from Israel, the US, Nato, or any of the players could easily escalate into large scale bloodshed, in which no one wins.

  2. I guess the world really is too small and no, we cannot just “all get along.” It is too bad that we so-called, “humans” have not evolved enough to realize that the settling of differences should take another route and that war should not even be thought of as a “last resort.” We will never learn and so history just keeps repeating itself.

  3. Every attack should have a purpose, right? What was Hamas’s aim? Breaking the blockade now? Second question: Hamas’s power is clear, that is, the power attributed to itself is clear, we are not talking about certain supports that may come later. Why did it throw the Palestinian people into such a fire when the duration and response of its action against Israel, that is, as an organization against a state army, was obvious? The third question is, even if we leave aside any disadvantages, if it had captured a region, it would have a Zionist wall built from around the world that would never leave that land to the Palestinian people. Were they going to raise a flag for show over the thousands of death? In response to the massacre they committed, Palestinians are now faced with losing even the little land they have and facing death every day. What is all this, if what Hamas is doing is not acting in the interests of Netanyahu, Zionists and West?
