According to the CDC, the US currently has 60 confirmed Covid-19 cases, many unrelated to travel to affected areas.

We will soon need such a response in Los Angeles.

I assume there have been cases in Los Angeles now, is that right Rosaliene? Yesterday the BBC mentioned three on the West Coast but didn’t say where.

What a crock of shit! Every year 650,000 people die from ‘common-or-garden flu’. State of emergency? I don’t think so. Got the ‘lefties’ panicking too.

The latest stats which puts the coronavirus into some perspective:
(From the The Guardian): We don’t yet know how dangerous the new coronavirus is, and we won’t know until more data comes in. The mortality rate is around 2% in the epicentre of the outbreak, Hubei province, and less than that elsewhere. For comparison, seasonal flu typically has a mortality rate below 1% and is thought to cause about 400,000 deaths each year globally. Sars had a death rate of more than 10%.

I honestly don’t know what to think, barovsky. The most reliable information I’ve heard is that coronavirus is twice as contagious as flu (which is the main reason for concern) and 10 times as fatal. The fatality rate for flu is 0.1% and the fatality rate for coronavirus 1%. Most younger people, especially children, seem to recover without hospitalization.

It’s my understanding that it’s very contagious but that has little to do with how dangerous to life it is. What I think is most obvious (and apparently with ‘normal’ flu as well), is it’s effect on people who are either already sick and/or with compromised immune systems, most of whom appear to be either old or poor and stressed out (the link between stress and a compromised immune system is well established).

I think the govts and the WHO are hyping it up, so today I hear that the head of the WHO says, ‘We’re in uncharted territory’. Say again? Don’t we know reams about how infectious diseases spread? And obviously, they’ll spread according to the actual conditions that they appear in, thus a country without developed health care, poverty, poor housing/sanitation is going to suffer more than a devloped one.

Funny that.

Good article, barovsky. I don’t know why people have been promoting the masks. They are useless. Apparently Russia takes the coronavirus serious – they have closed their border with China. They also have no reported cases as yet – whatever that means.
