US At Risk of Ecological Disaster Due to Improperly Stored Nuclear Waste, New Study Finds

Sputnik – January 29, 2020

The United States does not currently have a landfill for nuclear waste from the defense industry, which is normally stored inside metal canisters buried underground near the nuclear plants where it was produced.

The United States could face the risk of nuclear contamination due to inadequate nuclear waste storage methods, a new publication in the journal Nature Materials revealed.

According to the lead scientist behind the research, Xiaolei Guo, the existing techniques are insufficient to keep waste stored safely, as the material used in the current storage methods quickly becomes corroded, raising the risk of nuclear waste leaking into the soil, water and air.

The research team carried out an experiment in simulated conditions under Yucca Mountain where the US waste repository is expected to be built. They found that the corrosion level of stainless steel, used in storage canisters, was ‘severe’ due to chemical reactions being accelerated by nuclear waste […]

  1. Sadly I lived near Hanford (Washington) in the early 1980s and they were trying then to develop a basalt nuclear waste storage facility which failed. We are so f*cked with this mess.

    • Trace, I lived in Seattle for 19 years between 1983 and 2002 and saw a number of downwinders as clients. The federal government keeps delaying the final clean-up, as more and more containers leak into the groundwater. I think there’s good evidence the radiation has reached the Columbia River at this point, though they’re working really hard to cover that up.

      • When I lived there, the residents didn’t get any news on the danger – you had to go out of town to read about it. Mutant animals, yup. Really truly glad you helped people, Dr. Bramhall.

  2. And human beings claim to be so intelligent. Nuclear power plants in abundance on the ring of fire, awaiting earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tsunamis; leakage everywhere; inevitable container destruction; and wartime madness.

  3. Marblenecltr, I think it all points to the absolute sociopathy of the wealthy elite that runs the world. They don’t care a fig for their children and grandchildren – and will do anything for short term gain.

    • That runs the world and has run it forever, just over a greater number of people today. Sociopathy and psychopathy are not limited to some of the elite, it is everywhere, but in the hands of the powerful, it does more damage.
