~ Really? Since the day my close friends moved to Facebook as their prime means of staying connected with family and friends, I lost contact with them when I opted out from the network.

I have tried to opt out and join new networks several times, Rosaliene, and had the same experience when none of my friends would join. If a new social media network proves successful (as with Instagram and Whatsapp) Facebook buys them out to eliminate the competition. That sure smells like monopolistic behavior to me.
