Food Crisis Alert: U.S. Farmer Income PLUMMETS

Source: Mac Slavo

The food crisis could be upon us, as farmers in the United States report that income has plummetted.  If farmers can no longer afford to grow the food we all buy in the stores, expect not only a major price hike on the food that is available but a shortage of whole foods as well.

The personal income of farmers in the U.S. declined by an annualized $11.8 billion between January and March, the biggest 1st quarter drop in 3 years, Bloomberg reported, citing Commerce Department data released Monday.  The drop in income is being driven primarily by the fallout from President Trump’s trade disputes, a nosedive in commodity prices, and record flooding in the Midwest. As a result, farmer bankruptcies in the Midwest have shot up to levels the U.S. hasn’t seen for approximately a decade.

This makes the prospect of a food crisis very real. Although reports from the government claim that progress in the trade war can be described as “cautiously optimistic,” little can be done for the farmers already struggling. According to a report by Axios, America’s farmers are living through the worst economic crisis in almost 30 years and there is no end in sight […]

  1. The food crisis IS upon us. I can’t even buy iceberg lettuce because either the supply is low or because there is no one to pick the heads of lettuce. But either way, practically every single time I go for my salad fixings, the lettuce bin is empty. I don’t use spinach because there are always recalls on spinach and I don’t use romaine lettuce because there are always recalls on that as well. I am going to weigh next to nothing soon because I hardly even eat anymore. I did find some squash and turnips and I am going to the Farmer’s Market here tomorrow but I am sure it is too early to find much of anything. But yep, it’s already getting bad. And though I don’t eat meat, some guy in Nebraska who was raising pigs lost all but 17 when that bomb cyclone hit over there and he initially had 700 pigs. The same happened with a guy who had cattle. Many of his cattle died and he said he does not think that he can recover. This severe weather that is here to stay is wreaking havoc with everything. Soon, not only are people not going to have homes, they’re not going to be able to find food unless they can somehow, forage for it.

It is most definitely getting bad Dr. Bramhall.

    • Well, Shelby, it definitely sounds like the scenario scientists have been warning about – that the worst effect of global warming and catastrophic climate change would be our inability to grow food. Obviously it doesn’t help that most of the western world has industrialized food production and destroyed their soil and fresh water cycle in the process. I guess the time has come to learn to identify edible wild foods and to grow what greens we can in tubs.

  2. Hi Stuart, thanks for another great article…in our county ALL but 2 local farmers are ‘CORPORATE’ driving top of the line equipment, new trucks/cars – many head south in the winter, and own fancy lakefront properties!… Far from broke – YET!.. lol ..

I think what was left out, by the author, is the ‘gov ag.welfare’ as we call it, .. How it ALL adds up to one hand washing the other …

On the flip side, there are REGULAR meeting locally, in which more farmers are becoming curious about ‘returning to ORGANIC FARMING’… the way their fathers and grandfathers farmed…. Add to the 2 organic farmers, we now have 2 ORGANIC EGG PRODUCERS and an ORGANIC Fresh Food Co-op!! .. Is it going to take hold?..DARE I hold my breath??..

The fellows facilitating the local organic movement, are informing the ag. community of the ROUND-UP Debacle and cancer risks and how it is contributing to many diseases not just cancer… Much conversation HIGHLIGHTED the Cancer Deaths of fellow farmers over the last few years… Many concerned faces in the room!… (worried about their own health I am sure, because of using Round-up for DECADES)…

  3. Good point about the government ag welfare that goes to corporate farms. It’s very exciting, though, to hear that your county seems to be going organic. Here there are a few CSA (consumer supporter agriculture) programs where customers pre-purchase crops and get regular boxes of fruits and veggies delivered in season. The biggest problem small farmers have here is with the banks – none of them give out small loans, just enormous loans that forced them to expand production. The best they offer are pre-approved “overdrafts” at 21% interest.
