Facebook has been lying to the public about the scale of its problem with fake accounts, which likely exceed 50% of its network. Its official metrics—many of which it has stopped reporting quarterly—are self-contradictory and even farcical. The company has lost control of its own product.
I absolutely can believe that number because I am pretty sure that my fake account is still up from 6 years ago when I decided to see how outrageous I could be in coming up with a fake profile. I stated that I was George W. Bush’s ‘love child’ and that my name was Star Magnolia Bush, born on the wrong side of the blanket and still lived in a slave cabin waaaay down yonder past the ‘crick’ that led right up to the door of the old overseer’s house on George’s property in Crawford, TX. I also stated that I was home-schooled, but that I was also picking cotton in the early morning and at night, I would beat the ‘voodoo’ drums to entice a young ‘buck’ to keep me warm on cool evenings since my cabin wasn’t heated. I also stated that my likes were ‘horehound’ candy,(that’s real), possum stew and pork belly bacon and that I love to whittle in my spare time of 15 minutes before back breaking cotton pickin’ time and that I grew to love walking barefoot since I can’t afford shoes.
How’s that for a fake profile?
I can only say that one day, hopefully Facebook will become redundant and go the way of the dinosaurs. No Facebook for me and no Twitter either. I have no idea why Zuckerberg has not been fined in the millions for this and certainly some charges should be pending.

A wonderful ulterior identity, Shelby. The estimate of the 50% fakes of Facebook might well be an understatement. The entire site is shoddily constructed and lazily maintained, so there’s hope for an enormous implosion after all. 🙂

Bill, if it were up to me, Facebook would have imploded at its onset because I was never one for that sort of thing. WordPress is the only site I am on and it is going to stay that way. I was on Twitter for about 5 minutes and I was like, “This is just too stupid for words,” and I took myself off that site. And hell! I wouldn’t be surprised if my account was still there after all these years. It would seem that those ‘social media’ platforms need to maintain a certain number of users in order to be considered for advertisements and so it is no wonder that they will fake accounts or profiles because there is no likelihood of the founders of these social media sites heading to jail over fraud and lies and other nefarious activities. That is only for us lesser mortals.
Oh and thank you for the compliment on my ‘ulterior identity’. As odious as George W. Bush is, I somehow managed to complete the profile questionnaire. Ever the stubborn one I am, to be sure.

Shelby, or should I say Star Magnolia, that’s an absolutely brilliant cover you have created for yourself. I expect Zuckerberg will be charged in Europe (I think there are several countries investigating him) before he is charged in the US – especially as the US doesn’t have a functioning government at the moment.
