‘We’re moving to higher ground’: America’s era of climate mass migration is here After her house flooded for the third year in a row, Elizabeth Boineau was ready to flee. She packed her possessions into dozens of boxes, tried not to think of the mold and mildew-covered furniture and retreated to a second-floor condo that should be beyond the reach of pounding rains and swelling seas.

Boineau is leaving behind a handsome, early 20th-century house in Charleston, South Carolina, the shutters painted in the city’s eponymous shade of deep green. Last year, after Hurricane Irma introduced 8in of water into a home Boineau was still patching up from the last flood, local authorities agreed this historic slice of Charleston could be torn down.

“I was sloshing through the water with my puppy dog, debris was everywhere,” she said. “I feel completely sunken. It would cost me around $500,000 to raise the house, demolish the first floor. I’m going to rent a place instead, on higher ground.”

Millions of Americans will confront similarly hard choices as climate change conjures up brutal storms, flooding rains, receding coastlines and punishing heat. Many are already opting to shift to less perilous areas of the same city, or to havens in other states. Whole towns from Alaska to Louisiana are looking to relocate, in their entirety, to safer ground. . .

  1. Where are they going to go? There is flooding even in the Midwest as well as on the coasts.

    There is only but so much higher ground to escape to. And the other day, I saw a map of the U.S. and the potential for flooding of ALL coastal areas is astronomical and getting worse. I also read another story out of Madison, WI whereas even the university was flooded and those who studied charts and graphs and collected other data and stats about flooding, were themselves, flooded out and their charts and graphs and whatnot are floating down a street somewhere in Madison. Now, don’t that beat all.

    And the situation in the Carolinas, from all reports, is getting worse not better even as Hurricane Florence is no longer a threat. People are bemoaning the loss of their homes, elderly people and people on a fixed income are at risk for homelessness and even near my area, I just read about a car dealership that lost over 80 brand new vehicles, sustaining millions in damages. The vehicles were in water almost waist high. Not to mention, another glacier just broke off in Greenland. There is no turning back now. That ship has sailed and the shit is hitting the fan. But we are going to cut down some more trees and build another big ole Amazon warehouse so that Jeff Bezos can get his low wage workers to ship shit to our flooded homes. Yeah! Real smart thinking there.

  2. Wow, Shelby. I lived in Madison Wisconsin for two years in the early 70s while attending medical school, and the thought of Lake Mendota flooding the whole city is unimaginable. The climate scientists have been warning for several decades this was going to happen and yet the puppet politicians continue to pretend it’s not happening.

    I find your final statement about Jeff Bezos shipping shit to flooded homes extremely funny for some reason. I love your sense of humor.
