FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The number of U.S. lawsuits brought against Bayer’s (BAYGn.DE) newly acquired Monsanto has jumped to about 8,000, as the German drugmaker braces for years of legal wrangling over alleged cancer risks of glyphosate-based weedkillers.
Bayer had previously disclosed 5,200 such lawsuits against Monsanto, which it acquired in a $63 billion deal completed in June.
“The number of plaintiffs in both state and federal litigation is approximately 8,000 as of end-July. These numbers may rise or fall over time but our view is that the number is not indicative of the merits of the plaintiffs’ cases,” Bayer Chief Executive Werner Baumann told analysts in a conference call on Thursday.
Bayer shares have lost more than 10 percent since Monsanto was ordered on Aug. 10 to pay $289 million in damages in the first U.S. lawsuit over glyphosate-based weedkillers such as Roundup and Ranger Pro. . .

I figured so, it’s what anyone with a conscience would feel isn’t it? Now that Europe has bought Monsanto they can reap the evil, it just staggers me how nobody appears to care

Yes, I saw an article similar to this one and Monsanto-Bayer is still claiming that numerous scientific studies have proven that its products are not toxic to humans despite evidence to the contrary. And why, if Monsanto has such a good reputation, is Bayer hell bent on getting rid of the name “Monsanto.” Too much costly baggage attached to that killer company, me thinks. Why not keep the name “Monsanto” and get rid of Bayer? Another good question is if Monsanto’s GMO shit is so damn healthy, why are many companies now labeling their products, “non-GMO?” They would not do this if the public hadn’t been busily screaming and yelling against GMO products, stating in essence that we do not want that shit on our breakfast, lunch or dinner plates.
Bayer-Monsanto needs to quit with bullshit excuses already and start a “lawsuit payment fund” and folks need to line up, get paid and try and enjoy what bit of life they’ve got left after Monsanto’s killer products are finished with them. Not to mention, I just saw the first commercial yesterday by a firm of attorneys stating that “if you suspect Roundup caused your cancer, call them and they will get you the money you deserve.” Law firms everywhere are all set to cash in on those Roundup lawsuits since that $289 million jury verdict.
Also, Bayer-Monsanto is STILL claiming that sales of Roundup are booming! HA! Yeah….right. I’m ‘buying’ that bullshit! Bayer-Monsanto should just do us ALL a favor and go out of business and if any other entity displays the same egregious disregard for human life, they should suffer the same fate!

I think you’re right, Shelby. The tide has definitely turned for Roundup and Monsanto. I sincerely hope they take Bayer down with them. Occasionally there is justice in this world – though we have to battle like demons for it. Thanks for your comment.
