Hawks on Iran were caught off guard when Donald Trump announced last month that he would be willing to meet with Iran’s leaders “any time they want to” and without preconditions. The Israeli intelligence community–who otherwise have claimed authorship of Trump’s Iran policy–were “struck dumb for two days” amid fears that Trump might abandon the pressure strategy and instead seek to mend ties with Tehran.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s announcement of the creation of a new Iran Action Group at the White House–almost exactly on the anniversary of the CIA-led coup against Iran’s elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh in 1953 no less–was as usual short on substance but heavy on on accusations and demands. Yet, it may still be quite significant precisely because of the growing fissures within the Trump administration in regards to Iran policy.

Rediculous. All trump had to do was, keep the nuclear deal and not impose sanctions. Purposeful diversions and chaos. Nothing of substance was negotiated withe the N Koreans.

I think you put your finger on it, Peter. My sense is that most of the world views the Iran issue this way. Now all we have to do is convince Trump’s supporters.

Iran has been under CIA control for decades, since the 1950s. The Iranian people wanted control of their country back. Pres Trump is not a neocon and never has been. He was never a politician for one thing. He wants to free Iran from CIA control, that’s where it’s getting sticky. I’v researched this and Trump for 20 yrs. EVERY SINGLE DAY.

It is all about billionaires, oil, israhell, suadi arabia, the military industrial complex and the money. Trump is very much a part of that. To gasligjt us about trumpys supposed, ever-changing allegiances is disingenous to say the least. To comment on “Trump is not a Neocon,” when Trump has been invovled with roy cohn , roger stone and the likes of henry kissinger for 40 years, makes you sound so silly.

Trumps soninlaw is a horrible neocon. So are Kissenger, Roger Stone, Roy Cohn. Trumps buddies, from 40 yrs ago and ongoing.
I was in college in the seventies. My friend Benham, was the son of one of the Shahs judges. Iran, before Khomeini was proUSA and cia. It was good and bad. It was good because it was nonsecular.
Benham was executed because his dad had to sentence many Mullahs in Shah era iran. Some to death. The middle east is a hornets nest. It is very complicated. I do not like the religious government there but, to destabilize Iran now, will have serious consequences.

You make some excellent points, Kelly. People are bombarded with conflicting information from so many different directions that it can be extremely hard to know what to believe. I am coming to the view that US intelligence is guiding both the pro-Trump and the anti-Trump side of the argument, which is clearly very crazy-making.
