Billionaires Reach for the Stars While World Suffers

Their companies harvest our personal data, for which they pay nothing, to earn their fortunes. They are given patents that create 20-year artificial monopolies on technologies that should be in the public domain.

August 17, 2018 “Information Clearing House” –  With all due respect to Jeff Bezos and other billionaires whoplan to spend billions of dollars of their personal wealth on space travel, hundreds of millions of children who lack access to basic health care and schooling more urgently need help right here on Earth.

The world economy is pumping trillions of dollars into the accounts of a few thousand people. These riches should be directed first and foremost to end the millions of needless deaths caused by extreme poverty, and to educate the hundreds of millions of children who lack schooling. The billionaires would still have enough left over to indulge their longing for mega-yachts, personal space ships, private tropical islands, and other conspicuous consumption.

The digital age has created winner-take-all markets in information — including our personal data — and Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry…

  1. From the article:

“People as dynamic and capable as Jeff Bezos should aim their great wealth and energies toward the world’s urgent challenges: extreme poverty, needless disease, illiteracy, and environmental devastation. For those who don’t do so voluntarily, governments should put a levy on mega-wealth.”

We ALL know that Jeff Bezos is not going to be hit with an epiphany and “aim great wealth and energies toward the world’s urgent challenges, yada, yada, yada…..”

Bezos and the rest of the billionaires are going to continue with what they have been doing and that is to reap the profits while impoverishing their workers and extracting as much out of them as they can without paying them a living wage. They are going to continue to enact harsh working conditions and we also know that this is going on at Amazon since workers in the warehouses have to urinate in bottles in order to full fill their quota because they are docked pay if they don’t.

Disney World is another example of what is going down at Amazon whereas workers must live in motels because they do not make enough to afford even a studio apartment but the fact of the matter is people who shop via Amazon and who flock to Disney World and Disney Land are enabling these billionaires to continue as they do. What need have them to change and treat their workers with empathy and compassion when they know that billions of people are going to continue to shop via Amazon and billions of people will make the trek, even across oceans if need be, to experience Disney World and Disney Land? Some of the blame for attitudes displayed by billionaires towards those who make them so can be laid squarely at the door of those who enable them to be this way because they will continue to patronize those places.

    • Sadly, everything you write is true, Shelby. Any sense of solidarity or community seems to have been lost from mainstream society – with the vast majority of people just looking out after their own interests. Sometimes I think the only things that will save us is some massive disaster to force people to pull together again. Here In NZ, we found this happened after the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 – and it caused a lot of people to permanently change their ways.

Thanks for your most excellent comment.
