“I Go Days Without Eating”: Some Amazon Workers Left Homeless After Workplace Injuries

The new expose published over the weekend came just days after it was widely reported that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ net worth had eclipsed $150 billion after Amazon stock rallied to all time highs after its most recent earnings report.

Workplace safety incidents have been a major topic of discussion at certain high-flying companies over the last couple of months, but one of the names that hasn’t recently been mentioned has been Amazon. With the release of a new report by The Guardian early this week, that may very well change.

Amazon employees who suffer workplace safety incidents may be forgotten and left behind – with one report of a woman who was literally left “homeless”, living in her car in a fulfillment warehouse parking lot and going “days without eating”. Other employees claim that Amazon has failed to accept their workman’s compensation filings and that the company has tried to “settle” with them for a pittance in a manner that absolves Amazon of all liability.

  1. Dr. Bramhall, I just don’t get it! I have blogged extensively on the horrible working conditions at Amazon warehouses, as have you and plenty others and yet, we are having no effect at all. People are still behaving as though Amazon is the very first and last name in “worker friendly” environment.

What can be done for these people since no one seems to want to buy products from anywhere other than from Amazon? I have never bought a single thing from Amazon and I will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into purchasing items online, but as usual, I am in the minority. More’s the damn pity. People just don’t give a damn about those workers so long as their shit, ordered from Amazon, is delivered to them, pronto! Truly sad, it is!

  2. I am finding individuals here and there boycotting Amazon (my son-in-law for example), but there’s still no groundswell yet. I listened to a recent Bernie Sanders townhall meeting last night in which panelists talked about their experiences working at Amazon. Hopefully that will help spread the word.

Perhaps it’s a matter of showing people the alternatives to Amazon – Powell Books and Abe Books (for used books), REI for household items you want delivered and Costco if you’re willing to go out and pick them up.

    Thanks for your comment, Shelby.

    • I just bought another vehicle, a minivan because the area in which I live, there is a food desert and also people who have cancer cannot even get to their appointments and I am going to start a volunteer organization that gets people involved in helping one another out through voluntarily taking them for rides to pick up food items from local churches and to get them to their doctor’s office. Even a doctor is onboard because he has seen his patients miss seriously needed appointments because they have no way to get there. I am going to try and buy a small fleet of vans and get volunteers to drive them. I’m starting small and hoping to get it going good before this winter. Since I am always screaming about community involvement, I might as well practice what I preach. I believe ‘community involvement’ is what is going to help us when all else fails. Better to get it going now.
