Trophies were awarded for 1st through 6th Place with the 6th place trophy going to the only Seattle Police officer who won two games. All the other trophies went home with the kids

  1. Taken from the article:

“The competitors faced off across chess boards made from recycled scrap wood. The boards were fabricated by some of the inmates at Stafford Creek Prison who donated 20 boards to the Chess Club a few years ago and included a “What if…” story with each one to encourage the kids to work hard in school and make good choices in life.”

Once again, prison labor comes into it. And I cannot help but think of all the Black inmates who are imprisoned because of the ‘War on Drugs’ which punished them severely for being drug addicts as opposed to how white drug addicts were treated. ‘White’ addicts were sent to rehab instead of prison for being caught with drugs to support their habit.

This is just another slap in the face to Black people claiming that we are the only ones who make ‘bad choices’ and so don’t end up like us. I have never seen the inside of a jail cell, but thankfully, I was never addicted to drugs that were planted in our communities to get us hooked on them so that then we’d get caught up in the ‘War On Descendants of Slaves’ otherwise known as ‘The War on Drugs’.

  2. I wish the article could have gone into more detail about the origin of the chessboards, Shelby. It sounded to me like it was some kind of “scared straight” program the inmates came up with themselves. In Seattle, African Americans excel at chess and a lot of them play it in prison (far more than white inmates). I’m also aware of efforts in New York’s black community to get children involved in playing chess. It’s one of the few things that immunizes them against drug use.
