Food banks across the country [UK] are coming under pressure as children lose access to free school meals during the summer holidays.

David McAuley, chief executive of anti-poverty charity The Trussell Trust, has warned that some hubs within the 420-strong network are running dangerously low on supplies.

“Rising demand in the summer holidays as families struggle to get by without free school meals” is at the root of the problem, he said.

The Trussell Trust handed out 4,412 more three-day emergency food parcels for children during July and August last year than in the previous two months.

Around one million children currently receive free school meals during term time.

One independent food bank in Wales ran out of basic supplies such as dried pasta and toiletries for the first time at the end of the first week of the summer holidays.

One of the comments in “The BlackListed News” quoted Gandhi: “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members” Gandhi.

IT IS ALSO HAPPENING IN THE USA, AS THERE WILL BE CUTS IN MEDICAID.

  3. Millions here in America are just as food insecure as these people in the UK. It is a growing problem that is all too real for many school-age children. Without the school meal, some children barely eat a decent meal a day and what they do eat is most unhealthy for them and certainly is not aiding in the healthy development of a child. I don’t think many of them get the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables that their growing bodies need; especially the nutrients from healthy foods. This is all so disgustingly sad. The wealthy just shove their wealth in our faces every day while hungry children can just starve. Where is the justice in that?

  4. Shelby, I’m very sad to report that New Zealand isn’t too far behind. New Zealand used to have a healthy food in schools program but our current National government canceled it. Now New Zealand school children only get breakfast if their teachers pay for it out of their own pocket. Or if some charity pays for it.
