The Anti-War Origins of Mother’s Day

In 1870, Julia Ward Howe responded to the horrors of the Civil War by issuing her “Mother’s Day Proclamation” (see below), calling on women around the world to rise up and oppose war in all its forms. It would be decades before Americans officially began celebrating Mother’s Day, and much of the original spirit of the proclamation has since been lost.

Unfortunately, it didn’t take seeing as how war has been raging practically without let up for centuries, in one country or another and the U.S. has been instrumental in starting many wars that its had no business even looking cross-eyed at starting, intervening in or aiding and abetting in the continuation of wars damn near everywhere!

No, we have not been content just to cause havoc within our own borders, we’ve got to make sure that other nations and countries are not left out of what we so love; war! The U.S. is fanatical in its pursuit of endless war. We don’t want peace. Peace does not fill the coffers of the warmongers and the war hawks. If peace reigned, there would be no sensible reason to continue to fund a bloated Pentagon budget to the detriment of all else. Why, if we called all our soldiers home, what would they do? We can’t have the unemployment numbers rising because the military is made redundant. There is also that usefulness in continuing to engage in war; keep faking those employment and poverty statistics. War is good for business, don’t cha know? And business is good, in that department.

    • All sad but true, Shelby. The US pursues endless wars because they are an empire controlled by a rich powerful elite that is only concerned about their personal profit – who are also totally indifferent to how many people get killed and maimed. This whole idea that our government is a democracy responsible to the people that elect them is a total fairy tale designed to calm and pacify the population. But I think the worm is turning – Americans are no longer nearly as calm and pacified as they used to be. Thanks for your comment.

  2. Great point, Rexis. Clearly women have a very stereotyped role in modern society and the corporate media is very militant in ensuring they stick to that role. Thanks for commenting.
