In America, most prisons are owned by private corporations. Private corporations like to make money. Empty prison beds do not make money, so many states are being urged into contracts with the prisons, pledging to keep the prison anywhere from 70% to 97% full, at all times.

So where does the average person come in?
Maybe the average American is not all that affected, but many will be. Parole boards will be urged to deny incarcerated people parole. People will be sent to prison on relatively minor offenses. This will happen, if it’s not already, because when these contracts are in place, when the prison has a contract to keep beds full, they have to pay the corporation whether someone is in that bed or not. That money, dear people, comes from your tax dollars.

The FEMA camps were first built under Ronald Reagan. Mae Brussell used to write about them. It’s only recently though that they made an effort to staff them.

I am trying to understand why the government recently announced that it was phasing out the use of private prisons for federal inmates. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/19/us/us-to-phase-out-use-of-private-prisons-for-federal-inmates.html?_r=0 and left it at that. Why not phase out the use of private prisons for non-federal inmates? Especially seeing as how it has been stated that these private prisons are not cost effective, are poorly run and do not offer rehabilitative services. They are just in the business of taking our tax dollars and making a really horrible situation even worse while making extreme profits and I highly doubt there is any oversight of these private prisons and thus, abuse is most likely rampant. They need to phase out the use of ALL private ‘FOR PROFIT’ prisons! And they need to do it now!

Shelby, it’s my understanding that phasing out private federal prisons was an Obama administration initiative. But that Trump has decided to reverse it and ramp up private prisons again at all levels. I can only assume that CCA and the other private prison corporations donated heavily to his campaign – though I haven’t seen it in writing. I personally would favor a gradual phase out of all prisons. This would be easier than people think if we end the Drug War and arrests for drug possession and guarantee free medical and mental health care to all Americans who need it. It’s really shocking how many people are in prison because of mental illness and untreated physical problems, such as head injuries.

New Zealand has only had one private prison (Mount Eden) and Serco, the private company that was managing it, did such a terrible job the Department of Corrections had to terminate their contract and resume running it themselves: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/78514739/Serco-to-pay-Government-8m-for-costs-of-Mt-Eden-prison-takeover
