Trump names (non BlackRock) hedge fund founder Scott Bessent as pick for Treasury secretary

FILE PHOTO: Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a campaign event in Asheville, ...

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump announced Friday that he’ll nominate billionaire hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, an advocate for deficit reduction, to serve as his next treasury secretary, one of several personnel decisions that he unveiled as he closed out the workweek.

The announcements showed how Trump was trying to balance competing perspectives as he pursues an aggressive and sometimes contradictory economic agenda that includes cutting taxes, reducing government spending, putting tariffs on foreign imports and lowering prices for American consumers.

Trump said Bessent, who is closely aligned with Wall Street and could earn bipartisan support, would “help me usher in a new Golden Age for the United States.”

Bessent, 62, is the founder of hedge fund Key Square Capital Management, after having worked on-and-off for Soros Fund Management since 1991. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be the nation’s first openly gay treasury secretary.

He told Bloomberg in August that attacking the U.S. national debt should be a priority, which includes slashing government programs and other spending.

“This election cycle is the last chance for the U.S. to grow our way out of this mountain of debt without becoming a sort of European-style socialist democracy,” he said then.

As of Nov. 8, the national debt stands at $35.94 trillion, with both the Trump and Biden administrations having added to it. Trump’s policies added $8.4 trillion to the national debt, while the Biden administration increased the national debt by $4.3 trillion, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a fiscal watchdog.

Even as he pushes to lower the national debt by stopping spending, Bessent has backed extending provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which Trump signed into law in his first year in office. Estimates from different economic analyses of the costs of the various tax cuts range between nearly $6 trillion and $10 trillion over 10 years. Nearly all of the law’s provisions are set to expire at the end of 2025.

Before becoming a Trump donor and adviser, Bessent donated to various Democratic causes in the early 2000s, notably Al Gore’s presidential run. He also worked for George Soros, a major supporter of Democrats. Bessent had an influential role in Soros’ London operations, including his famous 1992 bet against the pound, which generated huge profits on “Black Wednesday,” when the pound was de-linked from European currencies.

Bessent previously told Bloomberg that he views tariffs as a “one time price adjustment” and “not inflationary,” and he said tariffs imposed during a second Trump administration would be directed primarily at China. And he wrote in a Fox News op-ed this week that tariffs are “a useful tool for achieving the president’s foreign policy objectives,” such as encouraging allies to spend more on defense or deterring military aggression.

In addition, Bessent has floated ideas for how Trump could put pressure on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whose term expires in May 2026. Last month, Bessent suggested Trump could name a replacement chair early, and let that person function as a “shadow” chair, with the goal of essentially sidelining Powell.

But after the election, Bessent reportedly backed away from that plan. Powell, for his part, has said he wouldn’t step down if Trump asked him to do so, and added that Trump, as president, wouldn’t have the authority to fire him.

Trump repeatedly attacked Powell during his first term as president for raising the Fed’s key rate in 2017 and 2018. During the 2024 campaign, he said that as president he should have a “say” in the central bank’s interest rate decisions. Presidents traditionally avoid commenting on the Fed’s policies.

UN Using Africa as a Testing Ground for Controversial Digital ID Systems

Silhouette of a person against a vibrant, abstract background with shades of orange and yellow.

Didi Rankovik

The United Nations (but not only) has clearly chosen to focus its push on introducing digital ID systems to some of the world’s developing countries, particularly in Africa.

What’s referred to in reports as “a comprehensive initiative” is now taking place across the continent, driven by the UN development agency UNDP, as well as the UN Innovation Network, and even UNESCO (Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). This is one of the components of what’s known as the UN’s Global Digital Compact.

Such initiatives are sold in those countries as a way to develop better access to services and improve “digital inclusion.”

Related: Digital ID, Bill Gates vaccine record, and payments system combo to be trialed in Africa

But opponents around the world say the schemes create large, centralized surveillance networks prone to misuse, particularly without stringent safeguards in place.

After the UN agencies previously formalized their initiatives in Kenya, it is now the turn of Ethiopia and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) where similar programs are being launched in cooperation with their governments.

In Ethiopia, the government is organizing ID card registration in what’s said to be a large-scale effort that encompasses financial services, healthcare, and education.

In Eswatini, the UNDP, together with the country’s government, carried out a digital readiness assessment. The goal was to find out if Eswatini’s digital infrastructure in various sectors is capable of implementing digital ID programs at this time.

It would appear not since the result of the evaluation revealed more money needs to go into developing that infrastructure, as well as training staff, and further developing both public and private digital services. The latter are supposed to take on an increasingly important role, as has previously been done in other African countries.

UN’s representative in Eswatini is quoted as saying that the results of the assessment program will be used to put together a roadmap to improve digital infrastructure and associated employee skills – that would then lead to the introduction of digital IDs.

Eswatini government officials spoke along the same line, saying that the country’s Digital Transformation Strategy will benefit from the results of the UN’s assessment, eventually leading to “integrated digital services.”

Various digital ID projects, either discussed or tested elsewhere in the world are typically unpopular, facing low uptake and constant pushback from both privacy and security advocates.

Who Controls Afghanistan’s Sovereign Assets?

Afghanistan News Update #24 November 19th, 2024

The Black Alliance for Peace

In August 2021, following the withdrawal of major U.S./NATO military forces from Afghanistan after two decades of occupation, Taliban forces took effective control over the country. In response, the United States seized the assets of Afghanistan’s central bank totaling around $7 billion. Half of that amount was transferred to the misleadingly named “Afghan Fund” in September 2022, a Swiss-based “charitable foundation” whose only role thus far has been to privately conceal and invest the funds without any concrete plans to return them, as confirmed by U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West. This runs contrary to popular demands by experts and humanitarian organizations who argue that a return of the funds is desperately needed now more than ever to help everyday Afghans.

Afghan women do not have any representation on the board of the “Afghan Fund,” nor do they have any official say over whether the assets should be returned. The board of trustees includes: two men selected by the U.S. State Department, Anwar ul-Haq Ahady and Shah Mehrabi, the U.S. Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs Jay Shambaugh, and Swiss government official Ambassador Alexandra Baumann.

According to a July 2024 press statement from the board of the “Afghan Fund,” some of the stolen assets may also be disbursed to the Asian Development Bank, an institution controlled by the United States, Japan, and Australia via majority shareholder status. While the funds are not returning to the Afghan people, this move shows that a process to return the funds to Afghanistan can begin immediately if the board members agree to do so. Regardless of whether the funds are in fact disbursed elsewhere over time, board members Ahady, Mehrabi, Shambaugh, and Baumann are all culpable in the forced starvation and impoverishment of tens of millions of Afghans – tantamount to the collective punishment of the Afghan people.

According to a January 2024 written testimony by the U.S. Congress-established Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the remaining $3.5 billion in sovereign funds held in the United States may eventually be transferred to the “Afghan Fund” depending on litigation filed by the families of 9/11 victims and other plaintiffs, while other funds held in Europe and the United Arab Emirates may also be added to the “Afghan Fund.” SIGAR found that none of the funds in the “Afghan Fund” as of early 2024 have been spent, are planned to be spent, or will ever be used to provide humanitarian or development assistance. Notably, while no disbursements have been made for the benefit of the Afghan people, portions of the over $340 million in interest that have been accrued from the stolen assets are being used to pay for the “Afghan Funds” operational and administrative costs.

The sudden deprivation of access to its sovereign assets led to a sharp economic and financial crisis in Afghanistan in 2021, which a recent United Nations Development Program (UNDP) study found is disproportionately affecting women and children. The seizure of assets combined with both U.S. and UN sanctions – ostensibly only targeting the Taliban – have hurt ordinary Afghans and aid organizations, affirmed by US-aligned rights groups and media outlets. The same UNDP report found that 69% of Afghans “do not have adequate resources for basic subsistence living,” while an estimated 15.8 million Afghans – including nearly 8 million children – are expected to experience “acute food insecurity” throughout 2024.

Clearly, the “Afghan Fund” – controlled by Western officials and Afghan compradors – has deliberately withheld billions from the suffering Afghan populace. It should be reiterated that a process to return these stolen funds, and in turn mitigate the U.S.-enabled humanitarian and economic crises plaguing Afghanistan, can and must begin right away. The following individuals have full power or influence over the release of the illegally stolen assets back to their rightful owners: the Afghan people

Ukrainians have stolen up to half of US aid

Ukrainians have stolen up to half of US aid – ex-Polish deputy minister

RT

Kiev laundered money for the Democrats, taking a cut of what was left over, ex-Polish deputy minister Piotr Kulpa has claimed

Ukraine did not receive as much foreign aid as claimed by the administration of US President Joe Biden, and a lot of whatever help it did get was embezzled, a former Polish deputy minister has claimed. Up to a half of the funds that reached Kiev was stolen by Ukrainian officials, Piotr Kulpa has alleged.

The political commentator previously held several posts in the Polish government, serving as deputy labor minister in the mid-2000s, and is currently a regular contributor on Ukrainian online shows. Kulpa is a vocal supporter of US President-elect Donald Trump, as evidenced by his remarks to Ukrainian journalist Lana Shevchuk on Thursday.

“Everyone understands that war-related corruption is linked not only with Ukraine, but also the supplier nation,” he said. “Who would ever believe that the US burned through $2 trillion in Afghanistan? It’s delusional!”

US aid programs are a mechanism to “write off large sums of money that finance shady systems under the Democratic Party’s control,” he alleged. The incoming Trump administration could review government finances and discover the truth that “Ukraine got very little” compared to the amounts mentioned in public statements, Kulpa claimed.

“But they will also find something else: that a huge portion of the funds was stolen in Ukraine. From 30% to 50%, regardless of the nature of the aid,” he added.

If Kiev were to recover all the embezzled money for the Ukrainian budget, the country would have enough for a year, Kulpa said. He denounced senior Ukrainian officials, whose regular salaries and bonuses he believes are outrageously high.

“It’s a spit in the face of every Ukrainian,” the former minister asserted. “To every European and American taxpayer. This system is criminal from start to finish.”

Trump and his allies have been highly critical of the amount of assistance that the Biden administration has sent to Kiev. The president-elect has argued that EU nations should assume the burden of propping up Ukraine, while the American government should focus on its own priorities.

US concerns about graft in Kiev have been reflected in some government documents, such as a report that Pentagon Inspector General Robert Storch’s office released last week. It said corruption “continues to complicate Ukraine’s efforts to achieve its EU and NATO aspirations.”

Trudeau Will Arrest Netanyahu if He Enters Canada

>

Jim Hoft

Earlier Thursday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas official Mohammed Deif.

The charges stem from alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict following the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, where Hamas men, women, and children slaughtered 1,300 Jews in southern Israel, including hundreds of kids, at a concert, and then took another 250 Jews hostage.

The Oct. 7 attack by Hamas was the largest slaughter of Jews in one day since World War II.

In response to this barbaric attack, the Israeli president vowed to destroy the Hamas terrorist group after decades of attacks on Israeli soil.

Since that time, thousands of Hamas fighters and innocent civilians have been killed in Gaza, where Hamas hid in the communities in schools, mosques, and hospitals.

This led the ICC to call for the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu for continuing to hunt down Hamas fighters in Gaza and, more recently, Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon in order to bring stability to the region.

During a press conference on Thursday,  Justin Trudeau, announced that he will have Israeli Leader Benjamin Netanyahu arrested if he travels to Canada.

The Risks of Water Chlorination

Close up of a senior woman's hand filling a glass of filtered water right from the tap in the kitchen sink at home

113 million U.S. residents get chloramine-treated water from their taps, according to the new study.Nico De Pasquale / Getty Images

For older individuals, water disinfected with chlorine products is probably even more toxic than fluoride-treated water. Chlorine disinfection technology is over 100 years old, and there are numerous safer approaches to water disinfection. The Netherlands banned chlorine disinfection nearly a decade ago. See https://dwes.copernicus.org/articles/2/1/2009/

[…]

Some 113 million U.S. residents receive chloramine-treated water from their taps, according to a recent study. The chemical has been used for about a century to disinfect water. Today, it’s often used to protect a system’s “residual” — the water that remains in pipes for several days after it leaves a water treatment plant.

Increasingly, chloramine has been favored over chlorine because the latter also produces byproducts, some of which are associated with bladder cancer and are regulated by the EPA.

David Reckhow, a research professor in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who was not involved with the study, said the finding was an important step. The ultimate goal, he said, is understanding whether the substance is a hazard; he concurred that it was likely toxic.

“It’s a pretty small molecule and it can probably for that reason enter into biological systems and into cells. And it is still a reactive molecule,” he said. “Those are the kinds of things you worry about.”

The authors of the new study arrived at their results after figuring out how to formulate high concentrations of the chemical for laboratory testing, said Julian Fairey, lead author and an associate professor at the University of Arkansas.

“We don’t know the toxicity, but this study has enabled us to be able to do that work now,” said Fairey, who studies drinking water byproducts. “Now, we can go about the hard work of trying to figure out what its toxicological relevance is in our water systems.”

He added that some past studies have suggested a link between drinking disinfected water and increased rates of certain cancers.

FBI Pays Visit to Pro-Palestine Journalist Alison Weir’s Home

By Chris Menahan

Storied pro-Palestine journalist Alison Weir of If Americans Knew revealed Monday that she was visited at her home by the FBI — seemingly over interviews she gave to Iranian state media outlet Press TV.

“FBI agents suddenly showed up at my home recently,” Weir said on X. “They asked me about a person whose name I didn’t recognize. I asked to have a family member present and ascertained from the agents that one of their offices had asked them to check in with certain people in regard to something to do with Press TV.”

Weir continued:

This is an Iranian outlet that has interviewed me on various occasions over the years. (During my 20+ years writing and speaking about Palestine, I have taken as many opportunities as humanly possible to get the facts out via any traditional and alternative, domestic and international media outlets available. I don’t attempt to vet media outlets and try to reach as many audiences in the U.S. and around the world as I can with the facts about Palestine.)

I have since found out that other individuals who have a history of working for a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis have also been visited by the FBI. I understand the agency has been weaponized in the past to try to silence groups and people that some members of government oppose.

It would appear someone is now trying to set the stage to silence dissent on Israel-Palestine in the United States by trumping up “connections with Iran.”

The FBI now operates as the ADL’s intimidation arm.

It’s possible the agency could change if Matt Gaetz becomes Attorney General and Kash Patel FBI Director but I wouldn’t bet on it.

“In September, the United States Department of the Treasury added Press TV to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)’s Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List,” Press TV noted in their own report on the FBI’s visit to Weir’s home.

“The US government has enacted stringent sanctions against the Tehran-based news channel, which has been on air since 2007,” Press TV added.

Attorney General Merrick Garland brazenly seized Press TV’s 14-year-old web domain PressTV.com in June, 2021 after Israel lost the propaganda war over their May, 2021 bombing of Gaza.

Last month in the UK, pro-Palestine journalist Asa Winstanley had his home raided by police and his electronic devices seized under the “terrorism act” despite not being charged with any crime.

Earlier this month, the Israeli government openly threatened Dan Bilzerian, Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens that they’re being “monitored” as “engines of antisemitism” for criticizing the Jewish state’s mass slaughter of women and children in Gaza.

As I reported on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is moving to try and silence criticism of Jews and Israel as hate speech and empower the federal government to crack down on anti-Israel protests on college campuses through the ADL-backed “Antisemitism Awareness Act.”

There is a bipartisan effort to take away the First Amendment rights of the American people in order to silence criticism of the genocide Israel is committing in Gaza.

Once Again Undercover FBI Sets Up Florida Man in Terror Plot to Bomb New York Stock Exchange Before Thanksgiving

New York Stock Exchange

Jim Hoft

Federal authorities arrested Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, a South Florida resident, for allegedly planning to detonate an improvised explosive device (IED) capable of massive destruction outside the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

According to court documents reviewed by The Gateway Pundit, Yener’s motives were rooted in a desire to “reboot” the United States government.

Yener, 30, reportedly spent months crafting a detailed plan to construct and detonate the device in one of the world’s most critical financial hubs.

His alleged target date was the week leading up to Thanksgiving 2024, a time of heavy market activity.

The FBI’s affidavit claims Yener believed the attack would “wake people up” and disrupt the U.S. government.

Investigators revealed that Yener had a history of extremist behavior, including prior threats of violence and documented attempts to join militia groups.

The affidavit reveals that Yener, born in the U.S. in 1994, began crafting his plan as early as 2017, gathering bomb-making materials and researching high-impact targets. His stated motivation? A radical vision of triggering a “reboot” of the U.S. government.

Yener, who previously sought affiliation with extremist groups, constructed the IED with assistance he believed came from a militia, though these “militia members” were, in reality, undercover FBI agents.

The investigation began when a tip led authorities to Yener’s unlocked storage unit in Coral Springs, Florida, containing bomb schematics and other alarming materials.

Surveillance and undercover operations confirmed his intent to target the NYSE, a symbol of American financial power.

He also recorded a manifesto intended for public release, warning the U.S. government to cease arms sales and implement mass deportations
