How climate change affects youth mental health in Pakistan

Manager, External Engagements, Engro

  • In 2024, Pakistan has faced devastating floods and extreme heat, hindering its recovery from existing climate crisis-related disasters.
  • While the economic and physical health impacts of climate change are clear, Pakistan’s population is also experiencing the often overlooked mental health ramifications.
  • How can a growing sense of climate anxiety or “eco-anxiety” in locals be addressed?

Pakistan is facing an onslaught of climate disasters. Since record floods in 2022 that affected 33 million residents and caused more than $15 billion in damages, the country has contended with several new crises that have hampered a sustained recovery.

In February 2024, flash floods further upended lives and livelihoods in the southwestern coastal region of Gwadar – the heart of a billion-dollar investment under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The summer of 2024 has been marked by searing heat with thousands of Pakistanis succumbing to heatstroke and inundating healthcare facilities.

  2. I read the article and most of the comments. The article links two minimally related factors: “climate change” and religion, specifically Hindu, Muslim, and the Judeo-Christian traditions. Has anyone noted that the earth’s polar axes are shifting as part of the 25,000 Cosmic Year, comprised of two 1200-year Cosmic months? Zodiacs in the West and in China divide the annual cycle into a twelve month period, based on the time it takes planet Jupiter to orbit the sun. What we call the North Star, Polaris, is in the location of the sky that was straight up from the North Pole, but that has changed since the Egyptian pyramids and other stone age monuments and sarchaeological sites were built. Also, the earth’s magnetic core is believed to be composed primarily of molten iron, and the spinning globe generates a magnetic/electrical current. This has less to do with climate change or religion than the fact that people tend to get more irritable under hot, humid, conditions. They are more impatient, drive faster, maybe beat people up or get drunk. Hubris is activated.

    • There is no such thing as Judeo Christian. You are either Judaic or a Christian. You can’t be both. Unless you are talking about Christian Zionism which isn’t Christian. It’s a Judaic cult masquerading as a Christian denomination religion. It was invented by Cyrus Scofield who wrote the Scofield bible after being payed a large sum by prominent Jewish Zionists in the early twentieth century.

  3. Once again, my response did not reach sensitive ears. I was only saying climate changes of late are not caused by human manipulations. Religion plays no part. Christianity is an offshoot of Judaeic lore, as is Islam, and all three are monotheistic. Archaeology, geophysics, and magnetic polarity on the earth indicates changes we don’t understand have altered he planet’s climate several times in the earth’s 4.5 billion-year history. We only know the Now and a few years of the past, open to individual interpretation.

Globalism is a fad promulgated by a contingent of people who use it to scare other people and drive them to war on each other.

    • And, don’t forget, they tax carbon emissions. It’s just another form of government theft. But, since the phony Covid scamdemic I’m beginning to believe that the only carbon they wish to get rid of is you and me!

      • We’ve trod this path before. I agree “they” are deluded in their self-aggrandizing philosophy, lacking “ethos”, as Joseph Campbell might say. I don’t agree at all with their methods, their ends, or their presumption that carbon is the enemy. All life is based on carbon substrates.
