Officials are currently considering the possibility of naming a special counsel to prosecute Hunter Biden, the son of President-elect Joe Biden, who is expected to take office in less than a month.
Sources told Fox News that the talks, described as high level, are continuing and no final decision has been made.
“It was passed to deal with a potential conflict of interest of the attorney general or the president of the United States,” the source told Fox News. “A president-elect coming in, where his appointed attorneys will be investigating his son? That’s textbook conflict.”
The report, for which the DOJ spokesperson refused to comment, was published on Wednesday. It is the same day that Attorney General William Barr, who said he disagreed with calls for a special counsel investigation into the younger Biden or possible voter fraud this week, is leaving his job.
Barr reportedly knew about investigations into Hunter’s financial dealings for months before the U.S. general election but kept them from the public.
President Donald Trump blasted the FBI and the Department of Justice, along with the media, for not reporting the probe before the November election. He said that Barr “perhaps knew of the corruption during the impeachment hoax.”
Barr’s deputy, Jeffrey Rosen, is becoming acting attorney general. Rosen told Reuters that he will continue “to do things on the merits and to do things on the basis of the law and the facts.”
President Trump tweeted on Wednesday that he disagrees with anyone who thinks a special counsel investigation into allegations of voter fraud is unnecessary and called for one to be appointed “IMMEDIATELY.” He is also reportedly pushing for a special counsel to look into Hunter Biden.
How did Joe Biden respond?
Federal investigations centered in Delaware and Manhattan are looking into the business and financial dealings of Hunter Biden.
Hunter Biden admitted earlier this month that he was under criminal investigation over his tax, affairs which focused on allegations of money laundering and his business dealings in foreign countries, particularly with Bursima Holdings in Ukraine and China.
Jen Psaki, who was chosen by Joe Biden to serve as his press secretary, said in a weekend TV interview that the president-elect would not discuss his son’s investigation with any candidates for attorney general. Biden himself promised that he would not interfere with the work of the investigator.
Biden has consistently avoided answering questions about his son’s troubles with the Department of Justice. On Tuesday, Biden called a reporter a “one horse pony” after he asked a question about the federal investigation into his son at a press conference. Biden then vowed that he would be objective when appointing his attorney general.
