An Arizona company voluntarily recalled more than 6.5 million pounds (2.9 kilograms) of beef that could be contaminated with salmonella, federal officials announced Thursday.

An investigation found the products, including ground beef and beef patties likely came from JBS Tolleson Inc., a meat packing plant west of Phoenix. The raw beef was packed between July 26 and Sept. 7 and shipped to retailers nationwide, including Walmart, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

  1. From the article:

“The beef was sold under the names Cedar River Farms, ComNor Perfect Choice, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms, Showcase at Walmart and in generic packaging”

Doesn’t sound to me as though there is a single package of “Perfect Choice” in that lot, nor is there “Gourmet Burger” as well. And what I would like to know is why is ALL of our so-called ‘beef’ supposedly INSPECTED by the USDA for safety and yet, there is recall after recall? This is just the latest in a string of ground beef recalls. And right after that, there is even now, a recall on eggs for salmonella as well. What the hell???!! Is it just my imagination or are we seeing far too many recalls of this type in such a short time span and this does not seem to have been quite as prevalent mere decades ago as it is now. What gives? And Walmart has had every single item that was a recall of late. I would rather starve and I most likely would if every store closed besides Walmart. I’d never stoop so low as to shop for food items or for anything else at Walmart since there is not a damn thing that I would purchase. I don’t shop there and I certainly would not eat a thing Walmart had to offer, even if it were free.

  2. Even the sight of supermarket ground beef turns my stomach, Shelby. As I understand, there is an excellent reason for all the recent bacterial contamination. Given to the recent move to factory farming, hundreds of cattle and chicken are raised together in confined spaces, where they’re literally standing in their own shit. By the time they’re slaughtered, they’re literally covered in pathogenic fecal bacteria and there’s virtually no USDA inspection any more to make sure they’re slaughtered in such a way the bacteria on their skin doesn’t get into the meat.

We don’t have Walmart here in New Zealand – another way in which we’re extremely lucky.
