Hawaiians win the right to local jurisdiction over chemical poisoning over Monstanto. A major victory for local self-rule.

Residents of the Hawaiian Islands just breathed a sigh of relief – literally, as the deadline passed for Hawaii’s House Judiciary Committee to hear House Bill 849, relating to Right to Farm, that would force residents to succumb to pesticide spraying without any say. All the while, companies like Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, and BASF use Hawaii land as a testing ground for GM crops.
Bill 849 amends Hawaii’s Right to Farm Act to ensure that counties cannot enact laws, ordinances, or resolutions to limit the rights of farmers and ranchers to engage in agricultural practices – including spraying with carcinogenic pesticides.
Hundreds of citizens called and wrote letters to state legislators urging them to stop giving Monsanto, one of the largest lobbyists in the Islands, to continue spraying pesticides, especially near their schools, homes, and hospitals.

The Most Revolutionary Act 
I’m glad they have a say now. But if a framer wants his fields sprayed with Roundup, then it will, sooner or later, effect the other farmer’s crops who don’t want it. Or at least this is what I have read: Roundup soaks into the soil, and then it spreads when it rains or the crops are watered.

It’s clear that Roundup needs to be totally banned – but for that to happen there needs to be greater awareness how dangerous it is. In my mind, this is the major value of campaigns like this.

Agreed. We have a similar campaign in New Zealand to stop local authorities to stop spraying Roundup on our roads and in our parks. Here in New Plymouth, a woman’s dog died recently after visiting a park that was recently sprayed.
