In radical new pop hit, Saudi women express their true views on men.
The song “Hwages” (“Concerns”) by the Saudi singer Majed Al-Esa is making waves in the Wahhabi kingdom, having hit over 2 million views on YouTube in just over a week.
In the first part of the video, women wearing niqabs (a veil, usually black, that covers the face while leaving the eyes uncovered) get in the back of a car, leaving the passenger seat at the front empty, while the vehicle is driven by a young boy.

I THINK RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL! MEN ARE NOT THE PROBLEM, IT IS MOST OFTEN THE CULTURE. ONE THING I CAN SAY, IT IS WONDERFUL TO SEE MEN CHANGING BABY DIAPERS, AND ACTUALLY TAKING A ROLE IN THEIR CHILDREN’S LIVES. TODAY, AS IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT BOTH PARTNERS HAVE PAYING JOBS, IT IS WONDERFUL TO SEE TWO PEOPLE HELP EACH OTHER WITH CHORES, IT MAKES FOR A MORE ROUNDED FAMILY, AND A COMPREHENSION OF EACH OTHER’S WORLDS. THE SOLUTION TO AN ISLAMIC PROBLEM, WOULD BE TO GET RID OF ISLAM, AND COVERT TO SOME OTHER BELIEF SYSTEM, AS LONG AS THERE IS ISLAM, THERE WILL BE PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. MEN HAVE PROBLEMS WITH ISLAM AS WELL, FOR AN EXAMPLE, IF THEY SO MUCH DRINK A BEER, THEY SHALL RECEIVE WHIP LASHES, ETC…YES, MEN ARE NOT THE PROBLEM ISLAM IS.

Futuret, I think the target of the song isn’t individual men – but a culture in which a male hierarchy severely oppresses women in all aspects of their lives. From what I understand, the problem in Saudi Arabia doesn’t relate to Islamic teaching itself but from Wahhabism – an extreme sect whose spread has been promoted by the CIA for political reasons. Other Islamic sects don’t necessarily engage in this kind of female oppression. In Bangladesh, for example, the prime minister is a woman.
