DHS Secretary: Illegals ‘Victimized’ by Employers Who Pay Them ‘Slave Wages’

WASHINGTON, DC — Illegal migrants are “victimized” by American agricultural and restaurant employers who hire and pay them “slave wages under the table,” declared U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary John Kelly on Thursday.

During a discussion on Central America hosted by the international affairs think tank Atlantic Council, Kelly said:

The overwhelming number of people that come are good, decent people looking for a better way to make a living. The issue is though in many cases there’s also, and it pains me to say this as an American, they’re victimized when they get here by a system…

  1. Alongside the disgusting practice of victimizing powerless illegals who work under the table, is the slave wage of the minimum wage itself.

    Still, I wonder… So often an issue finally gets justice when the prize no longer holds value. In this case, farmers would no longer get away with paying anyone slave wages… just as harvest-time becomes fully automated.

  2. Good point, JoAnn, though I seriously question claims about the commercial viability of fully automated harvests. To fully automate harvests, you need to breed plants for shelf life rather than taste and nutrition and increasingly consumers are rejecting tomatoes and other crops that taste like cardboard.
