No Joke: U.N. Elects Saudi Arabia to Women’s Rights Commission

By UN Watch Global Research, April 24, 2017

The Geneva-based human rights group UN Watch condemned the U.N.’s election of Saudi Arabia, “the world’s most misogynistic regime,” to a 2018-2022 term on its Commission on the Status of Women, the U.N. agency “exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

“Electing Saudi Arabia to protect women’s rights is like making an arsonist into the town fire chief,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch. “It’s absurd.”

“Every Saudi woman,” said Neuer, “must have a male guardian who makes all critical decisions on her behalf, controlling a woman’s life from her birth until death. Saudi Arabia also bans women from driving cars.”

“I wish I could find the words to express how I feel right know. I’m ‘Saudi’ and this feels like betrayal,” tweeted a self-described Saudi woman pursuing a doctorate in international human rights law in Australia.

  2. Nope! This is no joke at all! Saudis lash women to pieces over speaking, being seen and for basically breathing and now are given this role in the United Nations? I have not thought much of the United Nations for some time now, but this takes the cake and then some. But am I surprised? Given the current climate, worldwide? Uh…that would be a resounding “NO!”

    • I have to admit to not being surprised, Shelby, but I can’t fathom what these bald middle aged white men in suits are thinking. Do they think we’re idiots? I’ve never been a great fan of the UN. However there used to be strong support for the UN among liberals and progressives. After this latest move, you’re left wondering what their support base is beyond a few Wall Street banks. Right wing conservatives have been campaigning for the US to leave the UN for years. If liberals turn on them, as well, who does that leave?

  3. In November 2016, Saudi Arabia has been elected for Human Rights Council for 3 years term with the other 13 countries. The others are not totally pure and clean on the name of human rights at the council, but Saudi Arabia has been indiscriminately bombing Yemeni civilians for two years. This had been seemed a joke to me at that days. But I think, these all not only a joke, this is kind of gallows humor, Dr. Stuart Bramhall.

  4. Absolutely, migarium. The problem with US liberals, though, is they tend to be a bit wishy washy about human rights. Women’s rights, though – back in 2001 this was used as a pretext to drum up support for the US invasion and occupation of Afghanistan.

  5. Nope it’s no joke, Alan. Good point about the beard though. I think I might see a thin beard there under his chin. Apparently a lot of Saudi men shave their upper lip as a tribute to the prophet.
